LAHORE:

Over 100 people on Thursday participated in a walk against sheesha smoking on MM Alam road to raise awareness of the harms it causes to human health.

The participants distributed pamphlets among Sheesha café attendants on their route.

The walk was organised by the Consumer Forum (CF) and the Consumer Solidarity System (CSS). It started from Hussain Chowk and ended at Mini Market.

Praising the city district government for banning sheesha smoking, the participants sought a crackdown on sheesha cafes still operating in the city.

CF Vice Chairman Mohsin Bhatti said Sheesha smoking was addiction. He said despite the ban, many cafes operating near colleges and universities at Wahdat Road and in the Walled City were offering sheesha.

He said the walk was part of the first phase of their drive. In next phase, leactures will be delivered at colleges and universities. In the third phase, religious leaders will be urged to speak against Sheesha smoking.

While reviewing progress in the crackdown on sheesha cafes, District Coordination Officer Noorul Amin Mengal appreciated the role of the civil society.

He said on Thursday CDGL officers had raided six seesha cafes including Arabian, Black Café, Hale Bale and seized Hookahs. He said two people had been arrested.

F. | 11 years ago | Reply I don't think it should be made into a religious issue, but I do approve of increasing awareness about the hazards of smoking (including sheesha smoking). I don't see how giving people the ability to make an informed choice is bad. I'm a dental student. I'd rather people knew about the hazards now than get duped by the 'sheesha is harmless' myth and undergo a palatal resection because of carcinoma at age 29. :/

I agree with Urooj! And my concern is why do people have to meddle in other people's business? If one person feels that it is hazardous then simply stay away from it? do we not if bigger problems in this country? Oh wait actually meddling in other's business in general just may be the biggest problem in our nation.
