LAHORE: The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has announced its election schedule for the year, fixing September 8 as the deadline for payment of dues and acquiring membership.
According to the schedule approved by the SCBA executive committee, nominations will be filed from October 5 to October 9.
A notification issued by the SCBA secretary, Raja Zulqarnain, says a provisional list of eligible voters would be published on September 18. Objections to the eligibility of voters will be filed by September 22 and decided on September 25. The final list of eligible voters would be published on September 30.
Zulqarnain said the candidates may file their nomination papers from October 5 to October 9. The nomination papers will be scrutinised and any objections to these decided on October 13. The final list of candidates would be issued on October 18. Appeals against acceptance and rejection of nomination papers could be filed on October 20. Any such appeals will be heard and decided on October 22.
Candidates would be allowed to withdraw by October 23. The final list of candidates would be issued on October 25.
Polling, if necessary, will be held on October 27. Unofficial vote count would be announced the same day. The result will be officially notified on October 30. Zulqarnain said only life members and those who have paid their dues by the deadline will be entitled to vote. All members have the option of acquiring a life membership by September 8 by paying Rs10,000 in lump sum.
Former Human Rights Commission of Pakistan chairperson Asma Jehangir and former Lahore High Court Bar Association president Ahmed Awais are already campaigning for the office of president. Advocate Awais is being seen as the candidate of the Professional Group headed by Advocate Hamid Khan. Advocate Jehangir enjoys the support of former SCBA presidents Ali Ahmed Kurd and Justice (retired) Tariq Mahmood.
