“The police are hampered in their efforts to eradicate crime by workforce shortages”, Regional Police Officer Aftab Ahmad Cheema said on Monday.


He was addressing a meeting at the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI).

Still, he said, some hardworking police officials had helped bring down crime in Faisalabad by nearly 70 per cent since 2010.

Two years ago, he said, at least 40 crimes were reported in Faisalabad every day. Today, he said, the number was down to between eight and 10 per day.

Cheema said financial constraints were causing numerous problems for the police He said citizens’ cooperation was indispensable to overcome street crime.

He said the Police Department planned to constitute a committee on the pattern of the Citizen-Police Liaison Committee after consultation with the FCCI.

The RPO ordered an impartial inquiry into traffic fines imposed allegedly without a reason and directed Chief Traffic Officer Sardar Asif Khan to meet the FCCI members to resolve traffic problems and complaints of unfair citations.

The FCCI also presented a shield to the RPO.

Earlier, FCCI President Muzammil Sultan addressed the meeting. Former FCCI president Mian Aftab Ahmad and members Chaudhry Muhammad Boota, Haji Muhammad Bashir, Haji Muhammad Shafi, Haji Muhammad Abid, Rana Sikandar Azam and Chaudhry Muhammad Asghar were also present.
