Suspects get bail before arrest.

KARACHI:

The Tipu Sultan police have failed to arrest the suspects who beat an Express Tribune reporter Noman Ahmed, 26, Thursday.

On September 20, Noman, was cornered on his motorcycle by the roadside near The City School’s PAF Chapter branch by four men in a silver Toyota Corolla. Without giving any reason, three of the men from the car beat him before speeding away. They threatened him as well.

The car is registered to a Chaudhry Mohammad Shareef, who lives at House No. 430, Chaudhry Rehmat Ali Road in Manzoor Colony. He is the president of the Manzoor Colony Furniture Market Union and a former union councillor also.

The police were taken to his residence the same day, but used the excuse of a closed door to back off. The only way the family would have known that the police was coming is if they were tipped off. For two days now, the police have been saying that no one is present at the house.

Given the man’s influential political background, it seems that the police were waiting for the suspect to apply for bail before arrest before taking any action.

On Saturday, Shareef did appear in the court of Shahid Hussain Chandio, additional district and sessions judge (South), who granted him bail before arrest.

The suspect deposed at the court that he had given a ride to two students of the City School’s PAF Chapter campus on his way home. The motorcyclist [Noman] was thrashed by the two students after they got into a quarrel. He also claimed that he did not know the reporter.

The case has been handed over to the Special Investigation Cell and SP Investigations Naveed Khwaja has been appointed as the case officer.
