India releases water into Sutlej

The water level is continuously increasing at Head Islam, and many areas near Sutlej have been completely submerged.

PUNJAB: The flood torrent released by India in river Sutlej is heading towards Head Islam via Head Sulemanki and Head Ganda Singh.

The water level is continuously increasing at Head Islam in Vehari, and many areas near river Sutlej have been completely submerged.

Currently about 30,000 cusecs of water is flowing at Head Islam. The flood in river Sutlej has already destroyed crops at thousands of acres of land.

Head Islam's Executive Engineer Malik Mohamad Anwar said that the water level is increasing and there is a low level flood in Head Islam. But the situation is said to be under control.

Vish | 13 years ago | Reply Yeh aman ki asha India [ Images ] would provide an additional aid of $ 25 million to flood-hit Pakistan, Union External Affairs Minister S M Krishna [ Images ] announced in Lok Sabha on Tuesday morning. The aid would be routed through United Nations and World Food Programme missions in the flood ravaged country, Krishna added. India has already provided $ 5 million as initial aid, which Pakistan accepted after much dilly-dallying. Massive floods choked nearly one fifth of Pakistan a month back, killing nearly 1,600 people and displacing 20 million more.

I wont be surprised if someone accuses India of planting devices in Mohammed Amir's foot so that he oversteps and bowls no balls, which is remote controlled by Indians.

That it has not carried flood since many years has pushed the water table in Bahawalpur down making in some areas of the city brackish. The constant pumping of ground water has made problem more complicated as water born diseases are on the rise and the share of expenditure on health is increasing Regarding floods in Indian Punjab with merely 30,000 cusecs must be seen in the context that people have encroached the bed and damage is being done due to water not finding a way out. Water release by India should be welcome and the government of Pakistan should ask India to release enough water in the flood season to keep water table dwonstream recharched regularly. No international law allows diverting rivers to the extent that the flow pattern is affected. The same should also apply to India as well. No politics when ecology and environement is in question.

kamal | 13 years ago | Reply Dear Adnan,India is making dam so that it can be used for electricity and they do'nt ve to face the flood.Just think,if Pakistan would have made some dams they could have been saved from this flood to some extent.Whether you want to suggest that simply because pakistan is not able to build dam,India should also not do so and keep itself vulnerable to flood.

Glad to know that the people of Pakistan started to realize the actual situation and stopped blaming India blindly. I still believe that the major reason why most of the people hate India this much is because of the media.

javed malik | 13 years ago | Reply i am requesting to all be positive and think positive. if india release water, large area of india itself will be effected. if you all know about facts please visit the satlej river and let me know where you found the water from last five years, please this river is too much shortage of water from many years. the water level in surrounding areas is decrese in many places specially bahawalpur division. you know that may excess of water will effect the life but without water there is no life. this river is last line of defence against cholistan(rohi) desert and due to shortage of water surrounding areas are badly effected by desertification. it impacted on peoples economic condition as well as socialy,culturaly and traditionly. please if india relaes some water even access water, it is belssing for our peoples.

Its our own stupidity that even in so many years we didn't "realize" that there is something called dams and water control networks over rivers which control such situations. water direction of rivers is from india to pak and its a common knowledge since decades that when they get overflowed there is no choice but to flow down the water. Dont tell me u heard it for the first time! what should they do, flood themselves? or is it india who should built dams and water channeling networks on our land?

Our beef with the Pakistani establishment will not come in the way. It is nice to see atleast some of the Pakistanis see the wider picture and not blame India for everything.

This is dried up river thanks to 1960 water treaty. the release of water in sutlej is blessing for bone dry river bed for last 15 years. is this the standard of reporting by express news. Sutlej can accomodate 80,000 to 150,000 cusecs of water in its riverbed. just as down stream people suffering down Gandasing wala water it mean to see dry river

The past two days I have been seeing reports on Geo News and Dunya that water in the Indian dams is at the danger level mark and they have given the Pakistani authorities information that they are going to release water in the next 48 hours. Pakistani authorities said they were trying to make people leave the area. If India didn't release the water and say the dam is breached it would have flooded entire Azad Kashmir and Punjab and then we would have been in real trouble.

You guys just sit together and decide whether India is stealing your water or flooding your rivers.Stop Blaming India for all your Ills.It is a routine procedure when Ravi, Sutlej and Beas overflows , water is released towards pakistan by intimating relevant Pakistani authorities.

If we had done some planning and built some dams these problems would never have occurred!! So stop blaming it on India just as Tanzeel says our feudals are no worse than India!!
