England, shot out for 111 after electing to take first strike, hit back to restrict Pakistan to 96-9 on a bowler-friendly pitch at the P. Sara Oval.
Danny Briggs, a 21-year-old left-arm spinner, claimed three wickets for 15 runs after being asked to open the bowling by England's captain Stuart Broad.
Seamer Jade Dernbach finished with three for 14 as Pakistan's batsmen faltered against both pace and spin. Asad Shafiq's 20 was the highest score as seven batsmen failed to reach double figures.
England had themselves failed with the bat, losing their last five wickets in the space of eight deliveries.
Luke Wright's 38 off 36 balls was the only notable contribution as off-spinner Saeed Ajmal grabbed four for 14 and Raza Hasan and Yasir Arafat took two wickets each.
England take on Afghanistan in their first Group A match at the Premadasa stadium in Colombo on Friday, before meeting India at the same venue on Sunday.
Pakistan will travel to Pallekele for their two group D games against New Zealand on Sunday and Bangladesh on Tuesday.

In the warm-up game against India, all the players had given their 200 per cent, rising above their average. Kamran Akmal played a 'once-in-lifetime' kind of knock which he is not play again.
Players have peaked and given their best performance already. Now, all you will see is the post-euphoric phase where everyone will be back to their average self.......
Guys please support in getting back Hammad Azam in Team. We are wasting our talent! We should also induct Babar Azam and build him, he have skills, like Kholi. Without a doubt Kholi, Amla, Sanga are the World Best Batsmen. Who we have in Team, Nada! Means No One! Gear Up Get New Talent and Build Team around it. Why we are using Grouping Players in our Team Such as malik, Umar Akmal & Kamran Akmal? Why we are still stuck with Afridi, Misbah, Sami. Get back Juaniad Khan in Team if you all want to Win!
just teasing guys.. Good luck for both India and PAK
@THE: It seems to me that you love India soooooooo much.why?
@Arjun: oh...yes...India is thunder....!!!!! with best bowlers bowling at 160 kmph...ha ha ha
Strange match. Kamran and Shoaib came in too late, and they crippled Umer which is actually what lost us the match, he ate up too many deliveries without bringing his strike rate up before being taken out. Umer should not have come in before Kamran. Every time we experiment, we seem to lose horribly!
@Arjun: At least we don't spew disgusting hate filled comments all over the pages when India wins!!
k Akmal was down the order so that all batsman had some batting practice before the main event
thunder may come and go, but sun keeps flashing most part of the year; that is India.
And the former is of course Pakistan.
Its early wakeup call. They should know that relaxing and leaving game uptill end will cause their downfall. They are truely un predictable.
Now how did we lose that?
Inconsistency, thats Pakistan for you
good they lost today; over-confident might have killed their game in real matches
How does a team get thrashed against Australia, then come back and beat India in spectacular fashion. And then proceed to lose to a derisory target of 112 needed?
Why was Kamran Akmal bought in so late, after his last knock....
Get it together Team Pakistan.
This inconsistency isnt good.
Pakistan is going to reach the semi's yet again. the best T20 side in my opinion with so much variety & all rounder's in it, only thing that needs to be improved is the fielding! . anyway Good luck team Pakistan
