Pakistan will be looking to add to Australia’s woes ahead of the World Twenty20 by completing a whitewash when the two sides clash in the third and final match of the series in Dubai today.
Pakistan pulled off a sensational Super Over win in the second Twenty20 on Friday, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead and setting the tone for the mega event that takes place in Sri Lanka.
The win was extra special after it followed a 2-1 loss to Australia in the One-Day International (ODI) series, also pushing the opponents below Ireland to 10th in the ICC Twenty20 rankings.
The results have pleased Pakistan head coach Dav Whatmore, who said he was happy with the way the team responded after the ODI series and showed improvement in cricket’s shortest format — adding that the experience of the Super Over was crucial.
“I’m delighted,” Whatmore told reporters. “We can’t do any more than to win two out of two. It was an exciting finish but it’s good to have the experience of the Super Over leading up to the World Twenty20.
“We played consistent cricket and the players have responded well after the ODIs because there was just one day in between the change of the format. There’s a very strong bond between the players and they support each other.”
While the wins would brighten Pakistan’s chances, the issue of team combination is yet to be solved with all-rounder Shahid Afridi sitting out of the first two games due to injury.
However, Whatmore said he was sure of the combination ahead of the event, where Pakistan are placed alongside Bangladesh and New Zealand in Group D. The former Sri Lanka coach was also eyeing a whitewash, adding that a couple of changes were likely for the final game today.
“The game is still important. The pressure is off and there will be a change as it is an opportunity to look at one or two other players. But we will remain competitive as winning is important.”
Whatmore also hinted Pakistan might not
risk playing Afridi in the final Twenty20 but was confident off-spinner and Australia’s nemesis Saeed Ajmal will recover from a shoulder problem.
Meanwhile, Australia batsman Cameron White said his team was preparing well for the World Twenty20 despite dropping in the rankings.
“The bigger picture from the preparation point of view is that we are experiencing tough conditions and similar conditions to what we are going to experience in Sri Lanka,” said White, former Twenty20 captain. “Obviously we have not been winning, but we have made great steps from the first game to the second and I think we are heading in the right direction. From a preparation point of view it is fantastic.”

We don't want Shahid Afridi anymore..Time for him to say Good-Bye to Cricket World...Sorry Boom Boom but your time is over now..
All these debates about Afridi are due to our so called analysts, who are criticizing Afridi for his bad patch. Every player has one. Remember Tendulakar's bad run 4 years ago when people said he should retire, see what he has achieved after that. He has not played last two matches but is still under strict criticism. Let him get back in the team then analyze his performance. If he perform, well and good, if he doesn't we have the replacements ready!!!
Why is Malik still in the team?. He can perform only against India and Zimbabwe, bring in Asad Shafiq for him. Sami lol, I can picture Pakistan losing the T20 world cup because of him.
Its amazing what kind of short term memory our nation has....Boom Boom was the 'national hero' at one time and quickly becomes a villain in the next match. Its amazing how people forget how many matches he has won for the country and how he still ends up intimidating opponents.
Afridi is a big match person....look at his record in last world cup T20 world cup, so all Afridi haters shut up......
@Ammar: "dont forget he was man of the match"
The emphasis here is on "was". No one is doubting the contribution that Afridi has made to the team in the past, the question is that is he an asset or liability for the future. My humble opinion is that Afridi has hit his prime. For a long time I have not seen the same level of energy from him on the field and the same has been reflected in his performance.
I think it is time for the seniors to move away and start giving place to the youngsters the focus should on building a team for the future. Give the Hasan Raza's and the Hammad Azam's of cricket a chance.
In that respect I think that Razzaq, Misbah Afridi all should retire from the game.
Afridi haters .. I pity on your memory .. dont forget he was man of the match for T20 WC winning team for both semi final and final .. Also 2nd highest wicket taker in T20 in the "world"
I guess they should go with the same team on as the T20 world cup is close, the 3rd game will give them a chance to gel in more.
May Allah Make Team Pakistan Win All Upcoming Matches of Cricket, Ameen!
@Waqas: u kidding right? Imran nazir n malik rock
Afridi is a liability with the bat - he should not be recalled until he gets his form back - we can win without him
My team changing for 3rd t20I
Asad Shafiq for Imran Nazir yasir Arafat for Shoaib malik and Muhammad sami in for sohail tanvir
pakistan won the matches because so called "boom boom" wasnt in the team.
