LAHORE:

The City Traffic Police’s training school for drivers, Traffic Education Centre, will open on Saturday (today).

CCPO Aslam Tareen will inaugurate the centre, which is based at the City Traffic Police Lines at Thokar Niaz Baig.

The centre will have a seven-day training course for motorcyclists and a 15-day session for car drivers. There will be a two-hour session daily.

During the first hour, the trainees will be taught about road safety, traffic signs, road markings and how electrical and mechanical components of the vehicles work. The second hour will be hands-on training.

The centre has been set up in collaboration with Honda Atlas. The company has provided five Honda-125 motorbikes and in a few months will provide five cars.

Until April 2013, the centre will train only motorcyclists, CTO Usman Anwar said. Training for car drivers will be started in April next year.

Tasleem Shuja, Manager (Safety) at Atlas Honda Pakistan, said that the company had proposed that motorcyclists be charged Rs500 and car drivers Rs2,000 for the training. Those who bring their own vehicles may be charged Rs100 and Rs500 respectively. “There are people who know how to drive but do not know how to park, how to take a safe U-turn or how important it is to follow the traffic rules,” Shuja said. The centre will help drivers learn all that, he hoped. The trainees will be tested at the end of the term and awarded certificates if they pass.

Drivers with the centre’s certification won’t need to sit for the driving test given by the City Traffic Police for a driving licence.
