Custodial killing: Apex court cancels bail of accused policeman

KARACHI:

The Supreme Court has set aside the bail granted by the high court to a policeman in an extra-judicial killing case.

The case relates to the alleged murder of Muhammad Ali Butt, who was the son of a senior lawyer.

According to the prosecution, the Ferozabad police led by “encounter specialist” Faisal Jafri had arrested Butt alias Baba near his house and took him to the police station on December 28, 2010. The father was told that the police wanted to interrogate him, but Butt was found dead the next morning.

The police announced that the man was killed in an encounter.

The post-mortem report stated that the body bore six bullet wounds with torture marks and several fractures.

A case was registered against the police team, including PC Abdul Latif, who was granted bail before arrest by the Sindh High Court.

The decision was later challenged in the Supreme Court, which cancelled the bail given to Abdul Latif on Wednesday.
