Hussey scored 65 for his 39th fifty and Maxwell hit a 38-ball 56 not out to round off a challenging chase of a target of 245 in 47 overs spoiling Pakistan's chances of beating Australia for the first time since 2002.
Opener Mohammad Hafeez topscored with 78 in Pakistan's fighting total of 244-7 after they were put into bat.
Hussey added an invaluable 51 for the fifth wicket with Matthew Wade (22) after Pakistani spinner Saeed Ajmal (3-37) had threatened to wreck their rival's batting as Australia were struggling at 108-4.
Australia won the first match by four wickets here last week before Pakistan levelled the series with a seven wicket win in the second match in Abu Dhabi on Friday.
But the 37-year-old Hussey, regarded as one of the best finishers in limited overs cricket, kept his cool during a 72-ball knock. He hit seven fours and a six.
Even when Wade was bowled by Abdur Rehman, Hussey fought hard, adding 67 with Maxwell. When Hussey was bowled by Khan, Australia still needed 19 but Maxwell ensured the chase was successful, hitting four fours and three sixes.
Australia got off to a rapid start with David Hussey putting on 44 by the ninth over with David Warner (21), both taking the attack to the Pakistanis from the outset. David Hussey hit three sixes during his 45-ball knock of 43.
But once Ajmal came on the Australian innings faltered as the off-spinner dismissed David (Hussey), Michael Clarke (32) and George Bailey in his first five-over spell but Hussey then foiled Ajmal in his second spell.
Pakistan were also sloppy in the field as they dropped four catches and their wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal spurned one stumping.
Earlier Hafeez's 97-ball knock -- his first fifty against Australia in eight matches -- helped Pakistan post a challenging total.
Hafeez put on 129 for the opening wicket with Nasir Jamshed (48) and it looked as if Pakistan would post a big total but they were once again derailed by some sustained pace bowling by Mitchell Starc who finished with 4-51.
Jamshed, who hit 97 at Abu Dhabi, was again at his fluent best as he hit six boundaries during his 75-ball knock.
Once Hafeez fell, trapped leg-before by Clarke in the 33rd over Pakistan were hard pressed for runs. Hafeez hit four boundaries and two sixes.
Starc, who took a career best 5-42 in the first match, then came into his own. The lanky left-arm paceman had Asad Shafiq (27) and Umar Akmal (nought) in the same over before ending skipper Misbah-ul Haq's short 25 runs innings in the 47th over.
Azhar Ali made 27 not out to give fillip to Pakistan's total.
Surprisingly, Australia -- considered weak against spin on the Asian pitches -- have lost only one bilateral limited overs series in the sub-continent and Middle East in 20 years. They lost to India in a three-match series in 2010.
Pakistan and Australia now play three Twenty20 internationals -- all in Dubai -- on September 5, 7 and 10.

we need captain like imran khan
we need a captain like imran khan
kamran akmal should be removed before T20 World cup.this man is a big problem for our team.He is a plitician.
Doom Doom Afridi, Y he was selected for the 3rd ODI, it proved fatal for the team. Afridi is a burden to the team, he cannot bat, cannot ball even cannot catch a ball. Afridi is no good as a player but when he is a captain than he can do something to justify his selection
@syed how they will get muhammad amir back he is bannes for 5 years haha
Before the start of any series and tournaments, everyone starts to say Inshallah, the cup is ours but end up losing and getting eliminated and everyone starts to come out of their own versions of changes to be made to the team and select their own best 11. The same negative result happens again and once again and there are cries all around. This has been going on since the last many many many years and will continue to be so.
Without Saeed Ajmal, this present Pak team cannot defeat even Bangladesh.
One player doesn't lose you the match. People blaming Afridi are the typical hypocrite pakistani fans who have to blame the entire defeat on a single player of the team. Turning points of the match were that lbw of Hussey when he was at 0 which was not given. If we had taken the DRS we may just have won this match. Also taking Ajmal out of attack when he was in his wicket taking flow was a mistake. Personally I also think playing only one fast bowler was a risk as it was the final match and the batting attitude of the aussies would have been quite different from the previous two matches. That attitude could have been seen in the beginning of the auuise innings when they hit 4 sixes, all out of the ground and also in later stages of their innings. The difference between us ansd the aussies was fielding and effective on the spot decision making which we failed to do. Respect to our openers who put up a great show especially nasir jamshed with the highest runs in the whole series. And last but not least Saeed Ajmal. That man has made spin bowling such fun to watch especially this series when the aussies have no idea which way the ball is going to turn. We should learn from our mistakes. Inshallah T20 series is ours !
Now, Pakistan needs proof that they lost the match :)
house cleaning required
Suspend you sleeps Green, shirts tighten yourselves and don't let any catch be drop. Inshallah we will be victorious and will refute all wrong.
This is a conspiracy by CIA,RAW and MOSSAD
Please for God Sake, PCB should take swift actions before world cup. Following are steps: 1-Remove Misbah from all formats 2-Remove both useless Akmal brothers(who only play politics in team) 3-Remove Shahid Afridi as he is no use in team. 4-Get Gul back, along with Hammad azam & Babar Azam in team. 5-Get Asad S. mind fix and let him know you score u stay in team, 6-Remove a chucky coaches (Whatmore, Fountain & Akram) 7-Replace them with better coaches, also get bowling coach Shoib Akhter. 8-our ex-wicket batting keeper cannot build a keeper? (Rashid & Moin should support) 9-Get Muhammed Amir back in team along side with Junaid Khan. 10- Replace Umar Akmal with shoib Malik or replce with Kamran Akmal. kamran Akmal and Umar Akmal are the big disappointments in our team.
Surprise to see no one is saying anything to Selector Iqbal Qasim! This guy is hurting team progress big time. Should be sacked after World T20!
Saeed Ajmal is a lone match winner in the side but he cannot win you matches without any good support by the others. Reasons for our continuous failures having been poor batting and lack of quality fast bowlers. We lost to Eng by 4-0, almost lost both the matches against Bang, SL defeated us by 3-1 and now 2-1 by the not-so-powerful-as-it-used-to-be Australian side at spinning wicket. Pakistani team surely becoming next WI. In test matches, atleast Ajmal can bowl from one end continuously and thats why on Asian pitches Pakistan has good chances to beat any team. Asif and Amir's ban has really hampered our fast bowling department.

For those of you saying a bad decision cost us the match, had hussey not performed ,someone else from the aussie side would definitely done so,they played fearless cricket from the first ball.. and the stark difference in the fielding of both teams was fairly evident, we ran short of runs because of their excellent fielding ,teams cant win by missing so many catches and stumpings.everyone in the team needs to perform.period.lost another series to a new and not very strong Aussie team ,as cmpared to the ones in the past, dissapointed!
What ? Pakistan lost every series played against Australia since about a decade. No shame can surpass this.
Series fixed by RAW & BCCI
This team can never give us good moments as many liabilities are stuffed there in. Afridi is surely a big one and he must rested for a while as the fake hype he has created should now go away.
Totally defensive cricket and captaincy of Misbahul-haq led Pakistan to loose the match. When Saeed Ajmal was bowling at his best and took 3 wickets in his 5 overs,Meanwhile he was unplayable for wade and hussey, then I couldn't understand the crazy mind of Misba-haq to send him off and bring other bowlers to settle the batsman and provided enough confidence to the batsman to face Saeed Ajmal in late overs. I don't find any reason of this insane person to be the captain of team. This 37 years old man is ruining the future of young players and taking Pakistan from victory to defeat. He must be kicked out and hanged.:p
I thought BCCI fixed this match too because Pak lost.
My humble request to Chairman PCB, that, its time to get rid of kamran akmal, umar akmal, shoaib malik and their culture. Even a 12 year old kid could anticipate that both the brothers got themselves out deliberately in third ODI. Mr. Chairman please complete the cleansing process of team and we don't need Muhammad Amir or any other convict back in the team.
Afridi made 7 runs, gave 62 runs, took 0 wickets, dropped 1 catch. Now he should be made captain of team, says brainless educated middle class of pakistan......
Afridi has become a liability in the team, neither performing with the bat and ball. Hence selectors must consider a replacement to find a player who can contribute
Lala out of touch . . .;-(
Mr. tuk tuk Misbah the brainless captain at it again. Sending Afridi one down when his batting is totally off form. Then taking off Ajmal after 5 overs, when he's got Aussies in doldrums. God give us patience.
Congrats Mike Hussey and Aussies! Good game guys.
Sweet victory! The better team always wins.
Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oi, Oi, Oi!
what a innings by Hussey under pressure. Pak payed the price of not reviewing the umpire's decision when he was plumb lbw at 0.
Pakistan can keep their bowling review as runner's up.
Congratulations to Four A's, Australia, Afridi and two Akmals.
We can fight with fate but not with Akmal Brothers.
its not shahid tanveer its sohail tanveer and currently shahid afridi is playing.. correction please.
