KARACHI: Improvements in sanitary conditions to contain cases of dengue fever in the city were ordered by the Sindh governor, Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan, on Wednesday.

He stressed the need to ensure proper cleanliness in all areas of the city, besides carrying out fumigation and taking other preventive measures. He said this while chairing separate meetings with the Karachi commissioner, Roshan Ali Shaikh and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation administrator, Mohammad Syed Hussain, at the Governor’s House.

The Sindh health department has conceded that this year so far 157 dengue cases have been reported in Sindh and all except one were reported in Karachi.

Khan said that the authorities concerned should work hard to give citizens a clean and healthy atmosphere and save them from diseases including dengue. He also appealed to the citizens to take precautionary measures to save protect themselves and their families.

“Emergency response centers in the city should be made fully functional and their network further expanded,” said Khan.

Dengue fever is a virus-caused disease that is spread by mosquitoes. These mosquitoes thrive on stagnant water and lack of proper sanitation in Karachi and broken, leaky and overflowing pipelines and gutters in almost every locality provide an ideal condition to breed mosquitoes. The garbage collection system in the city is also in shambles, which also helps spreading diseases.
