Muhammad Nawaz Sial, 55, was laid to rest at a graveyard in Kuriawala after funeral prayers at Shafqat Shaheed Ground next to Government College for Women.
The FIR, registered with Kotwali police on a complaint filed by Professor Sial’s widow Nusrat Nawaz, says that he was shot and killed by two unidentified assailants at the entrance to their home in new Civil Lines area.
Mrs Nawaz, principal of the Government College for Women Mandi Shah Jewna, said one of the assailants’ accomplices waited for them on a motorcycle parked in front of the house. She said the men, who wore masks, pushed Professor Sial and started beating him as soon as he answered the doorbell. They also shot him several times, killing him on the spot.
She said her son Muhammad Raza, daughter Armghana Ali and nephew Muhammad Hasnain tried to catch them but they escaped.
She said in a brief scuffle at the entrance her children managed to pull the mask off one of the suspects. She said they could identify him. “They said he appeared to be in his 20s,” she said.
Kotwali police later set up pickets on major roads in the area but were unable to arrest the suspects.
Investigation Officer Sub Inspector Sanaullah said police had gathered evidence from the scene. He said a team had been formed to arrest the suspects.
