Unlike the attack on the Mehran naval base earlier, which took 17 hours to clear, the suicide bombers were not able to hold the base but were quickly disposed of in 20 minutes. The worrying fact, however, was that despite very detailed intelligence, the terrorists were able to climb over the wall. The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) proudly owned the attack, timing it with reports that Pakistan was getting ready to launch an operation in North Waziristan.
The TV discussions that followed ignored a whole lot of straightforward information and chose instead to repeat the charge that the TTP was working for Pakistan’s external enemies. Retired military officers and TV anchors trundled out the usual frog-chorus of how the Americans were paying the likes of Hakimullah Mehsud and getting his suicide bombers to attack Pakistan’s military installations. A report in The New York Times, which had pointed to a rumour that Pakistan was storing its nuclear arsenal at Kamra, was made the basis of how Americans were converging to a strategy of ‘taking out’ Pakistan’s nuclear deterrence. What was ignored was an official statement from Washington that Pakistan’s nuclear weapons were safe because they were not at Kamra.
The designation of the ‘enemy’ was arrived at all over again in the face of years of hard evidence to the contrary. It was America, the eternal enemy of the Muslims in general and Pakistan in particular. Tagged to the US were two other ideological and religious enemies: India and Israel. All the previous attacks were also attributed to America, making the discussion absurd. Without proof, the miracle of concocting a mindset of our choice has been achieved. Now, the entire nation believes that its tormentor is not the Taliban who continue to shout from rooftops that they are staging attacks because Pakistan continues to be an ally of the US. Amazingly, the TV discussions after the Kamra attack embraced the Taliban point of view that Pakistan was suffering because of its abjectly slavish policy of following orders from Washington.
Shockingly, Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, who had said on August 14 that Pakistan’s crisis was internal, related to a general embrace of extremism and violence, was indirectly attacked for presumably planning to stage an operation against the terrorists in North Waziristan. He was guilty of telling us the truth: that the trouble in Pakistan was of our own making and had to be tackled internally. The discussants countered that by saying that if the army chief wanted to confront the terrorists in North Waziristan, he must approach the elected government and ask it to ‘go to the people’ and take their consent to the operation. Reference was made to earlier parliamentary resolutions mandating the army to stop drone attacks on Pakistani territory and demand that US-Nato forces respect Pakistan’s territorial sovereignty.
The main opposition party, the PML-N, has already told the army chief not to attack the terrorists in North Waziristan despite intelligence reports that the Taliban will attack the PMLN-ruled Punjab in the near future. Punjab’s inspector general of police, after receiving the reports, conveniently took off for umrah in Saudi Arabia. Parliament has not framed laws that could prevent the acquittal of killers in the court of law; now, the politicians feel that North Waziristan should not be attacked by the army. If you ask the people, the reply is likely to be not in support of any operation — without any blame attaching to the ordinary Pakistani, poisoned by the lies pouring out of a section of our manipulated media and mainstream curricula.

why us drones cant reach hakim ullah mehsood, fazalullah and so many other terrorists whos terrorists are carring out attks inside pakistan, what p-iii orians and awacs have to do with taliban. why are they operating safely from afghanistan? where are the colition forces, drones can target aghan freedom fighters but not the terrorists thats the enough evidence that TTP is being suported by some countries by providing mony, weapons selection of targets etc. these are the reasons people point toward us india afghanistan and israil.
Nobody can endorse the barbaric and moronic behavior of TTP. As society we have become callous and unjust to the point that unless it affects us directly we dont get bothered about savagery all around us. We find refuge in labels such as sunni and shia or liberals and fundamentalist. When a group does some injustice we bend over heels to justify or condemn it based on our associations to the group rather than justice.
Similarly our reaction to such excesses is to perform even worse excess. What Taliban have done is criminal and the silence of "fundamentalists" is condemnable but the "liberals" would now justify illegal, over the top and completely insane carpet bombing on innocent civilians by the army without any fear of consequences. It doesn't matter right now that their indiscriminate and unjust killing of innocent people living in north waziristan can result in their retaliation with even more deadly wave of attacks. We have the guns and bombs now so we should let our anger out by dropping them. What talibans would do next would result in another tit-for-tat operation of even bigger magnitude. And the cycle would continue. We all are gone insane.
@Qasim: - you have innovated another conspiracy theory. There should be a competition among the Pakistanis to come out innovative conspiracy theories for various probable incidents awarded. or even anew course may be added in the text books on conspiracy against Pakistan.
Q1: How are we so sure that the base commander was hit by enemy bullet and that he did not got himself shot to become an instant hero?
Q2: Bullet on the arm? Weird, isn’t it? This for sure saved him from the fate Mehran Base Commander faced!
Q3: Has any one seen his wounds and conducted the forensic tests on the bullet – which gun fired it? Enemy of Friend?
Kayani's assessment is spot on that terrorism is an internal problem but many in Pakistan who have been fed on conspiracy theories and denials refuse to accept this stark reality. There are others who argue that these militants are our own people must realise that they are killing their own people based on their religious ideology, dividing the society in to many parts which would lead to fragmentation of the country. Therefore, the army chief's statement on civil war possibility must be taken most seriously and people should back the military in war against terrorism.
I am very much looking forward for the day which seems now imminent more than ever when Hamid Mirs, Kamran khans with long beards more in length than the length of their fist- a measuring rod thanks to the genius of Afghan Taliban- informing people of the decrees issued by Amir-ul-Momineen. Just imagine when they would be announcing that all girls schools are closed for indefinite period. Working women should sit for the whole of their life in the confines of their home. Democracy is a conspiracy against islam and constitution is a Jews conspiracy to subvert Islamic system and every one would be asked for expression of his "Baiat" at the hands of Amir-ul- momineen. The army, bureaucracy, judiciary and police will cease to function and Taliban will take charge of everything under the sun. Heaven blessings would be showered on us and living happily afterwards..
Pakistan tries to find unity in hatred. Since it is unable to find unity in nationalism as most identify themselves as Muslims first and Pakistanis later, the country tries to unite itself in hating someone. USA India or Israel are the most convenient candidates
If the peddling of hate speeches from Mosques and other forums is not controlled and the purveyors not prosecuted, future which currently seems grim will become hopeless. Nobody wants to confront reality because the whole education system and upbringing is based on the principle that Islam is superior. Now how can the public be confronted with the reality that 40,000 Muslims in Pakistan have been slaughtered by Pakistani Muslims themselves for holding a different view of the same religion. Sensible Muslims and others too have been warning that if the State uses Religion as an opiate to dull common senses of people, the consequences can only be tragic. We can write long winded meandering articles running into pages but the essence of the problem can be easily captured in two or three well articulated sentences. The road from dogma to violence is a short and slippery one. Pointing to imaginary ghosts in the direction of North, South, East or West as has been done for decades has compounded the problems rather than helped address them.
The Army needs to go to North Waziristan AND STAY THERE, to permanently bring the writ of the state to the FATA region! It will be messy, but the militants can't retreat to any "safe havens" and regroup, so they can be hunted down and ELIMINATED! These animals cannot be reformed, just like a rabid dog, they must be put down with extreme prejudice!
Anti American blather is the grease that makes Pakistan wheels turn -- doesn't matter whether the blather has no substance - doesn't matter whether there are mountains of evidence that make the conspiracies look ridiculous. It's obvious you prefer to blame others for your problems and are partial to people who spout simplistic and somewhat moronic solutions like "end corruption in 90 days". It's your bed -- you made it -- hope it's comfortable to sleep in.
I think solution for bringing peace in Pakistan lies in complete sweep of North Waziristan (both Haqqani and TTP) and Punjab (against Punjabi Talibans). They are not only threat for innocent lives but also threat to our national security. Army need to prepare people hearts and mind for war through media. Media should avoid conspiracy theories in their regular talk-shows and help army to go after monster.
Nothing new here ! When has Pakistan ever faced up to the reality in past six decades in any sphere of its society or its actions ? Pakistan has managed to create an generation after generation of the same, due to those in power and their self interests, nothing is likely to change much in near future either. Those who have grown up and lived in their illusional coccoons have simply lost their basic abilty to recognisethe reality surrounding them ! Sadly those that did, have left for other shores to live and bring up their children with some sanity !
Pakistan cannot take on the Taliban at present, and in the future they will merely become stronger. Half the sunnis in Pakistan call shias kafirs. That fraction will only go higher in the future. We cannot get rid of the Talibans without a lot of bloodshed and close to a civil war. We are unwilling to pay this price, and so all the political forces are going for appeasement. All of the present leaders will be swept away as the Talibans get stronger. Taliban rule in Pakistan is now inevitable. I wonder what will "more Islamisation" mean when the Taliban are ruling us. I guess the Past of Afghanistan is an inkling.
