Former Arsenal striker Robin van Persie could score the goals that Manchester United needs to win back the Premier League, according to former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp.

Arsenal agreed to sell van Persie, their 29-year-
old striker, to United in a £24m deal and Redknapp told BBC Sport that Persie would be a great acquisition for them.

“If he performs like he did last year then him and Wayne Rooney will just be an incredible partnership,” said Redknapp. “He’s a special player and he’s a fantastic signing for Manchester United. I see them winning the league, now that they’ve signed Persie.”

Van Persie scored 44 goals in 57 games for club and country last season, including two against United. He also won both the players’ and football writers’ player of the year awards and was entering the final season of his contract at Emirates Stadium and stated earlier this summer that he did not want a renewal. He joined Arsenal as a 20-year-old in 2004 for £2.75m.

Meanwhile, United manager Alex Ferguson believes van Persie will complete his move in time to make his debut in the club’s opening match of the Premier League season at Everton.

“Wayne Rooney and van Persie are two fantastic players and it will be great to have both of them,” he said. “It gives us more strength and more combinations up front. In 1999 I had Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole, Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the four best strikers in Europe. We have a fantastic collection now.”
