Kaira was briefing the media along with Minister for Water and Power Ahmad Mukhtar on the 2,000MW electricity shortfall that the country had faced due to a 'tornado' in Muzaffargarh a week ago.
“All repairs have been completed,” assured Kaira.
Addressing the issue of loadshedding, Kaira said that there was no “fund and fuel” problem faced by the country in terms of electricity. “We are using all our resources but the demand is rising,” he said.
Attributing the shorftall to previous governments, Kaira said that the real cause of loadshedding was that no electricity projects had been initiated between 1996 and 2008, adding that since 2007, there has been an annual increase of 1,600MW in electricity demand.
Kaira, however added that Pakistan faced little loadshedding compared to other South-East Asian countries. He stated that these countries were facing a shortfall of around 4,000MW.
Opposition should change slogan
Criticising the opposition for their “Jaag Punjab Jaag” slogan, Kaira said that instead of inciting hatred and resentment among the masses against the government, the opposition should motiviate the country to work with the government through this difficult time.
“They should chant ‘Jaag Pakistan Jaag’,” said Kaira, adding that the current slogan was “activating the nation’s enemies in all other provinces”.
Kaira reiterated that loadshedding was, despite popular belief, being shared equally among the provinces.
Iran pipeline
“The belief that electricity is uselessly lying around in Iran and we are not taking it is wrong,” said Kaira, speaking on the Iran pipeline issue.
“Iran does not have surplus electricity, they have to put a pipeline near Pakistan’s border,” he said.
“We have to lay a 300km-long line, they have to install a power house of around 500 to 800MW and that will give us electricity,” he added.
“We have made that agreement (with Iran) despite immense international pressure,” said Kaira adding that those who “engaged in sloganeering and propaganda would just cave in to any such pressure”.
“It is just our government (that perseveres),” he added.
Stating the the party never compromised on the nuclear assets issue, Kaira said that they were threatened of being made into a “horrific example”.
“Zulfiar Ali Bhutto became that “horrific example” but we did not leave the path,” Kaira said.
“Benazir Bhutto was told not to make the atomic power delivery system of Pakistan, but we made it,” he added.
“Even today, there were a lot of hurdles in the way of our agreement with Iran but we made the agreement,” he said, adding, “It requires billions of dollars and international cooperation is required to get that.”
“Those who continue their sloganeering should know that international forums don’t give money so easily,” he said.

If the next government eradicates loadshedding it will be an egg on his face. No matter how much he, his president or PM says it PPP will not win these elections instead they will lose horribly INSHALLAH.
Then you don't deserve also the forming of the next government as you are predicting in your speeches.........
Our country possesses one of the best geographic locations in the world. We got so many ways to generate power. Why didn't you build more dams despite the awesome natural drainage system originating from the himalayas? Why not use those massive packs of coal? Why don't you install solar power plants in the scorching deserts of Balochistan? We could even build windmills. We are a nuclear state for crying out loud. Are you saying loadshedding won't end even with all these resources utilized? Or is it that "you" people were too incompetent to do it?
Its not load shedding but darkness in the minds of Pakistanis including major establishments which has plunged Pakistan into complete darkness. Religious intolerance, support of sectarian and militant organisations and lack of will in fighting militancy are the major causes for the country passing through this dark tunnel.
@Mohd Butt: For your kind information, KPK is the province which is producing more than 4000 mega watts and its requirement is 2600 MW and still we are deprived of electricity... by whom? Answer: PUNJAB.
Simply cursing the PPP, the ruling party is nit going to solve the problem when the power production capacity itself is less than the demand which will increase further every year, Instilled capacity needs to be increased for which the main input i.e. gas must be available un interrupted . Additional capacity of Hydro power (which is the cheapest) has to be added Ideally .this had to be done proactively as capacity addition of power projects takes quite longer period for completion and cost may also get escalated in case the projects get delayed which is quite normal in democratic set up having wide spread corruption. But it is still better late than never..till then the country may make short term arrangement to purchase electricity from neighboring countries, if possible. acute power shortage will lead to people's unrest which will be anti incumbency and PPP also knows it.
Very well said!! after long 4 1/2 years PPP said truth. NO ELECTRICITY. I feel soo sorry for Pakistani people. PPP,MQM,PMLN,ANP,PMLQ you are brutal. You silently tortured whole nation for 4 and a half years. I just pray that God give wisdom to the people of Pakistan not to elect these barbarians. Just give chance to PTI and see what they can do for the people of Pakistan.God have mercy on Pakistan people.
It is obvious that ppp servants will defend their leader and party at every instant. They don't care about country progress at all.
All I can say take every single penny bacck from these PPP thugs before they run away from the country. They all deserve the same fate as Salman Taseer
Making others fool means himself. He can play with journalists but not with the nation. 2000 MW shortfall means we face 1 to 1-/2 hour load shedding. Gilani gave Rs. 6 million to his Secretary Zardai gave Rs. 7 billion to Q league as development fund to be used as clutches for the Government and he says short of funds. He is not bothered because there is little load shedding in his constituency. He proved that politicians are shameless people.
How can a person tell so many lies in one single sitting. Load shedding in Pakistan is worst then any other country in the region. The shortfall is much larger than 2000 MW. I can name around 12 power projects which were initiated between 1996 and 2008 but PPP government stopped funds allocation for them only to create an artificial shortfall in order to get money for projects like Rental Power. And how can he intermix the Iran Gas Pipeline and importing electricity from Iran issue? And a mega project like Tarbela, Mangla or Ghazi Barotha can be completed in 4 years time, did PPP government come up with any such project? Whenever PPP people speak, it drives me crazy.
@FAN: Lets correct you also - it was from ZA Bhutto's time. Tarbela was started in 1968 way before Bhutto's time.
I wonder if he had this assumption that we were expecting solutions from PPP.
“Jaag Punjab Jaag” is a bad slogan does not expect from PMLn consider themself a National party . . . !!!!
This kaira does not carries more wisdom than any ordinary daily wages labour in pakistan and it's our bad luck that people like him are ministers.
Dear PPP "leaders": Please go home. What kind of democracy you are preaching if you cannot (or willing not to) solve people's problems? Please tell us a single thing you did in the last 4 years for the betterment of the people..
Aameen!
m@ani you are 1000000% right brother..May Allah's curse on this filthiest government...Loads of curses on every member of PPP and who will vote them in coming election!
Is Kaira living in La-la land? Because the shortfall isn't anywhere near 2000 MW. If it were that low, there would be load-shedding of only 2-3 hours in the country while actual load-shedding is around 12 hours... Also, the shortfall makes sense only when you take it as a percentage of the demand. For South Asian states like India, a shortfall of 4000 MW is negligible.
@ M@ni: This is the voice of every Pakistani but we all know some nuts will still vote for PPP. Let us just hope that more people vote for change.
I am surprised our government cannot find 1 competent person to head our institutions.... How come they a thinking that they are not answerable...
some bitter facts . . . !!!! since the Zia's time (the inventor of loadshadding) from late 70's nobody took serious steps, We are paying the price of burning in the heat ...???
@mani, you've not clearly read the news, did you? Read it once you've dried your sweat:
*strong textthe real cause of loadshedding was that no electricity projects had been initiated between 1996 and 2008, adding that since 2007, there has been an annual increase of 1,600MW in electricity demand.strong text*
With this population bomb, and increase of 1600 MW annually, you've yourself, and that Molvi to blame, not the govt.
One Word: LIAR !!!
PPP has failed in all aspects.
If there is no end of loadshedding, then how come Mr. Ch. Mukhtar claimed that there will be no loadshedding in Ramadhan?
Shame on you and your mentor sitting in President House.
What else can be expected from corrupt PPP.
Just came from juma, i was there in mosque for 1 hour without light, honestly i am holding my badwaaa's because of rooza :$ all sweating and i'm feeling very very low.
Loads of curses on every member of PPP and who will vote them in coming election!
Now we know what did Mir Sadiq and Mir Jaffer did to their nation, Kira they were like you, baseless, sale able,, shortsighted, and dishonest to the land they were born. Almost 5 years, your government did nothing but stealing from Punjab rightful power share and giving to other provinces beyond their fare agreed share. Shame on you.
Of all the people left in PPP, he is one of the last few who have some credibility. On a side note, it is my understanding that Pakistan's energy shortfall of around 6000 MW, so Pakistan's situation is one of the worst in the region.
