The Lyari gangsters had reportedly devised a multi-tiered strategy to attack the APCs. Some of them told The Express Tribune that the aim of the strategy was to imprison the policemen in their own armoured vehicles.
In order to do this, they dug deep trenches in the main streets of Lyari to block off potential escape routes the APCs could use once under attack. The second part of the strategy was to aim at the tyres of the APCs, so that they could be immobilised and once this was achieved, the gangsters planned to direct their fire on the bullet-proof windscreens, which they knew would eventually break. “It was necessary for us to do all of this,” said an anonymous gangster. “If we didn’t take these measures, we might not have been around to make these statements.”
