KARACHI:

Sindh's Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), in a joint operation with intelligence agencies, arrested five terrorists belonging to a banned terrorist outfit — the Baloch Republican Guard (BRG) — foiling a planned series of attacks on railway tracks, officials said on Sunday.

Addressing a press conference at the CTD headquarters in Karachi, DIG CTD Captain (retd) Ghulam Azfar Mahesar, along with SSP Operations Irfan Bahadur, said law enforcers recovered explosives, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), weapons and ammunition from the suspects.

They were identified as commander Jahnoor, son of Yar Muhammad; Jamak Khan, son of Misri Khan; Ali Jan, son of Amir Bakhsh; Niaz, son of Imam Bakhsh; and Noor Muhammad, son of Jumma Khan.

During interrogation, the arrested terrorists confessed to carrying out at least five explosions on railway tracks in different districts of interior Sindh.

The DIG said the arrests followed a coordinated intelligence-based operation that successfully dismantled the terrorist network involved in railway sabotage activities.

He revealed that investigations into recent attacks on railway infrastructure in Pakistan also indicated the involvement of a neighbouring country, exposing what he described as another nexus between external elements and terrorist groups.
