
Reigning Wimbledon and French Open champion Nadal advanced with a 6-2, 7-5 victory against 83rd-ranked American Taylor Dent to reach the third round of the $3 million hardcourt event, a tuneup for the US Open.
The Spaniard will next face Frenchman Julien Benneteau, who eliminated Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 6-2.
Meanwhile, Federer advanced when Uzbek qualifier Denis Istomin suffered a right foot injury and retired after only 28 minutes with 16-time Grand Slam champion Federer leading 5-2.
“It gives me an extra day to get into it. From that standpoint, it’s good,” said Federer.
In another match, Djokovic defeated compatriot Viktor Troicki 6-3, 7-5 and will face Argentina’s David Nalbandian, a winner two weeks ago at Washington.
Murray beat France’s Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 6-7 (3/7), 6-2, to book a third-round match against Latvian Ernests Gulbis, who beat Austrian Jurgen Melzer 6-7 (8/10), 6-3, 7-6 (7/5).
Meanwhile, in the men’s doubles round Polish pair Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski defeated Pakistan tennis star Aisamul Haq and his Indian partner Rohan Bopanna 7-5, 7- 6(7-3) in the pre quarter-finals. Earlier, the pair defeated Rajeev Ram and Bobby Reynolds 6-3, 1-6, 10-4.
