Amid overwhelmingly heightened security measures, religious parties along with tens of thousands of right-wing supporters reached the federal capital on Monday midnight to mark the much-hyped ‘long march’ against resumption of Nato transit routes by Pakistan.
Thousands of frenzied protesters reached the federal capital in a convoy of hundreds of buses, trucks and cars, many carrying the black and white striped flags of the DPC after completing the 275-km journey from Lahore to Islamabad.
Hafiz Saeed Ahmed – head of Jamaatud Dawa (JuD) which primarily sponsored and organised the march – advocated peace in the country and vowed that unless “infidels” do not launch an attack on a Muslim country, the Muslims cannot wage a war against them.
“Islam means peace. We will establish peace in the country. No Muslim can take out swords against any other Muslim. We are taught by our Prophet (PBUH) to advocate our religion with our character,” he said.
His was the most moderate speech among the leaders of the alliance who categorically emphasised on anti-US sentiments. Surprisingly there was little mention of India, contrary to a common perception of Saeed’s anti-India stance.
Saeed warned the US that if they made any attempt to launch an attack on Pakistani soil, they will face similar resistance as they had faced in Afghanistan.
The DPC had announced this “long march” to protest the government’s decision to reopen Nato supply lines. It announced to organise similar protest demonstrations in Khyber-Pakhtunkwa and Balochistan along the cities from where Nato supply routes pass.
Sharing the future strategy of the DPC to maintain pressure on the government to halt the transit supply lines, leaders announced a similar long march from July 14 to 15 from Quetta to Chaman and from Peshawar to Torkhum from July 16 to 17.
Chanting slogans against opening of Nato supply routes, the marchers followed a single route through Islamabad Expressway to Faisal Chowk leading further to Jinnah Avenue and arrived at the mouth of Parade Lane at about midnight.
After completing a journey of 36 hours on the Grand Trunk road, the participants that numbered in thousands had gathered near the Parliament House and after making speeches dispersed peacefully.
Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Ahle Sunnat wal Jamat (ASWJ), Maulna Samiul Haq’s Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), Ansar ul Ummah, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed’s Awami Muslim League (AML) and other smaller groups are part of the alliance.
Speakers
Maulana Samiul Haq told the gathering that “there is a lesson for you in the struggle of the Afghan Mujahidden.” He said the Afghan Taliban had defeated the Soviet Union and now America is on the verge of collapse and by adopting their way of Jihad we can get rid of the Americans. He took jibes at parliament and said it has become a redundant platform since it has no say in decision-making.
Syed Munawwar Hassan said that a “well-cooked conspiracy” was behind the resumption of Nato supply routes and the government had failed to deliver.

any sensible Pakistani will not support these Mullah drama
Long March has failed, huge time wasted, embarrassment was created for people and the government, major political parties kept them away from the long march, deliberately, because they understood that people know ,them as opportunist and power hungry, they have no interest in the common man's welfare.
there is no consensus due to selfishness, every party every leader have different approach and different direction leading to destination.
Wolfs in jungle running different direction in search of hunt, nation has disappeared in the darkness, sea of the darkness.
@Hammad:
Don't know in which centuries these guys live but I am pretty sure you have been in cave for long time; seeing the economic system of US getting collapsed day by day, inflation rate is not going down from 8%, people have been living on roads, having food in alternate times, the statement of Hafiz ji is quite realistic. More recently US' desperation to open NATO supply was more an economic reason than any other reason
It is indeed shameful to see people with negative comments against a cause which stands on the basic fundamental human rights and principles. NATO supply and drone attacks are a violantion of not only sovreignitity but is raising havoc and genocide.. a massacre never before witnessed in history...
I get an impression from the picture that Islamabad is having snow-fall and sub-zero temperature. In that the case?
Shame is not the word to describe ppl who are criticizing this march against innocent killings. All drawing room ppl should come in such summer and should do even 1% of what DPC has done.
Now this is what you call a peaceful protest despite covering a span of 2 days. Hate them or love them - but the media has clearly shown the bias by nearly boycotting a major event (at least in terms of news-ability). It's a shame especially when general workers' conventions in Karachi and Hyderabad get so much coverage
There is no right left wing issue....
86% peace loving patriotic Pakistanis are against WAR supplies and External interference....
When you hand over the foreign policy and defence policy of the nation to the frenzied mob on streets, then there is no hope for you.
World is watching this with trepidation......
See who is preaching about peace? Hafeez Saeed the mastermind of Mumbai carnage? He is talking about peace is like demon cermonising the rituals
Frenzied is a small word for these madmen!
I wonder, if the pic above has been taken in Dec or July? ET- any comments? I am sure its a "file picture".
bandwagon is ready, let's see who is ready to jump in.
A positive thing to note is that not even one signal was destroyed. No cars/tyres burnt. The protest was peaceful Alhamdulillah.
PMLN sponsored protests against load shedding should take this protest as an example to carry out their protests.
@ayesha_khan: Apart from time, such a March on feet needs principled dedication & strong patriotism. Do you think the DPC leaders have these qualities?
Is there another nation in the world where terrorists are allowed to roam around freely?
All power hungers and hypocrites ....Shiekh Rashid, Ijaz ul Haq and other rejected figures are campaigning for coming elections...... PLease forgive Pakistani people from bring more menace to this nation...
These guys enjoyed power for decades and screwed entire structure of Pakistan....
Deport all right wing, their likeminded and corrupt politicians of existing government, their corrupt allies to Siberia....
@usali
Actually you are wrong. In Pakistan no entity can rise (business or political) to such heights without the backing of the army.
In fact, many many intellectuals and liberals have suspected the hand of army behind Imran Con's rise.
What makes you think DPC is any different? Without army's support, so Hafeez Saeed can achieve this kind of success.
Army is infamous for handling our foreign polices and issues relating our borders. It seems like drama of army by letting NATO pass, but on the other hand shias are warned by forces that the route Iran Iran is not safe what is this; drone nation cargo is safe in Pakistan but shias are not safe. DPC is just their when they want them only to create a hype among religious fanatics who think government is doing every thing in Pakistan.
Really subtle, right winger. Divide and conquer.
"After completing a journey of 36 hours on the Grand Trunk road, the participants that numbered in thousands had gathered near the Parliament House and after making speeches dispersed peacefully" THANKS GOD!
instead of wasting their time and energy of these stupid protests these religious zealots should protest against corruption, load shedding, inflation, religious intolerance, killing of minorities and the multitude of problems facing the country. someone needs to tell these ignorant people to get their priorities straight.
Sami ul Haq said America was on the verge of collapse. Seriously. What century are these guys living in?? Some people just need to be kept in insane asylums.
Should describe it as a long drive rather than a long march since clearly the journey was not made on foot ( can't get to Islamabad in 36 hours on foot).
"Difa-e-Pakistan: Right-wingers descend on capital"
Get your politics right please.
Right wingers did not not "descend" on the capital - they make up the very fabric of the capital. Just because they sit in posh sectors and palatial homes, doesn't change the way they think - it is no different than these men from simple poorer non-posh backgrounds.
Besides Karachi and Lahore, most of this country believes in the right-wing ideology.
These days newspapers like to carry headlines because they "sound" good, but in essence are very myopic and suffer from being cliched.
Let me critique the opposition parties here. Had PML-N and PTI protested vehemently instead of just lip service, DPC won't have got the space they are using to their leverage. It appears as if when army is not in consonance, both the parties keep a mum. Having the same impression about DPC, I don't see it producing any tangible result. In particular, since protesting NATO supplies has been mantra of PTI from day one, along with criticizing drone strikes, their weak response to the NATO resumption is particularly meaningful. Is it that they don't want to irate the army. In my opinion, PTI has to come down pretty hard on this issue, before it starting loosing grounds to other parties, since it is the anti war slogan of Imran Khan, that has earned laurels for PTI, in particular in KPK and tribal belt, where the effects of war are more pronounced.
