According to the police, a grenade was hurled at the residence of local trader Abdul Qadir Memon in Darakshan, which failed to detonate because the assailants had not pulled the grenade's pin properly.
Talking to Express News, Memon said that extortionists were calling him, threatening him to pay them Rs30 million, adding that on Sunday too he received a call demanding he immediately pay Rs10 million.
The attack has left the trader and his family fearful for their lives.
Traders in Karachi have constantly been under attack recently, with the 'bhatta' mafia threatening the former to pay up exorbitant amounts of money or get killed.

Federal and Provincial Interior Ministers and extortionists are enjoying their pay and perks whereas business community is moving out of Karachi due to fear of lives.
Many traders have already left and settled in Islamabad and the rest are also planning to move, which will create more unemployment in Karachi.
If government wants, they can fix the extortionists in 24 hours but the actual problem is that there is no will and therefore there is no way to stopped the extortionists and arrest them and put them behind the bars, but political consideration is the biggest hurdle for the political government to decide one way or the other.
Had it been any Army Rule in the country, I would have loved to see how many extortionists have sent the "chits" for extortion.
@SK Salman: Yes my friend. I have seen the benefits of democratic forces and police in managing the city in the last 4 and half years. You give another 5 years to this sort of democracy and I would not be surprised if the city is turned into a mini Kabul. While you may want to live in the lala land I'd prefer being a little more realistic. Yes, we need the military to sort these mobsters out and set up military courts which would give speedy and rigid sentences to these sort of gangsters roaming about in Karachi. Its the military's job to protect the country from all sort of threats. External and Internal.
Traders dont pay tax to govt , dont pay there electric bills just give some money to line man, they dont pay good salary to labour i think this is the good way to get money after all its a bad time no jobs nothing.
A couple of years back, HH Zardari advised traders in Karachi to arrange for their own security..
These traders are extortionists themselves. They don't pay taxes, do hoarding, rise prices artificially & squeeze the poor & vulnerable. I don't have any sympathy to traders. Everyone is criminal, some legal & others illegal.
@Hro: Either that, or they were afraid it will blow up in their hands. Do not forget these criminal elements are cowards who hide behind a gun or a grenade to hurt common citizens. If they have to do something that calls for bravery or chivalry you will not find them for miles.
Western style elections campaigns are very expansive to run and our politicians will not spend 20 corores rupees of their own money to serve the people of Pakistan so they back these criminals to extort money from any which way they can and when they are in power they resort to corruption to become rich to keep hold on that powerful positions we can not afford this style of democracy which requires thousands of parliamentarians whose main aim to get in to politics is to loot the country and that is what is happening for past 60 years and that is why our country is in such bad shape. We as a nation have to do lot of soul searching and put Pakistan’s interest first before our own interest.
Traders and other can move to other cities. Karachi will suffer if this behavior starves it of its revenue sources.
There is only solution to this problem of spiraling law and order situation in Karachi and that is to give Karachi under the control of military. Till these political parties are in power, Karachi will never know peace and harmony.
And it was intentional that assailants did not pulled the grenade’s pin properly...It was just a blackmailing tactic
Our politicians are sheltring these criminals for their vested interests..otherwise police is capable enough to curb these miscreants. Nothing good can be foreseen in this situation.. Karachiites will have to protect themselves
