Extortionists attack trader's house in Karachi

KARACHI: A trader was attacked in Karachi on Sunday, when a grenade was hurled at his residence in Clifton’s Darakshan area, Express News reported. According to the trader, he was attacked because he had refused to pay ‘bhatta’ (extortion money) of Rs30 million.

According to the police, a grenade was hurled at the residence of local trader Abdul Qadir Memon in Darakshan, which failed to detonate because the assailants had not pulled the grenade's pin properly.

Talking to Express News, Memon said that extortionists were calling him, threatening him to pay them Rs30 million, adding that on Sunday too he received a call demanding he immediately pay Rs10 million.

The attack has left the trader and his family fearful for their lives.

Traders in Karachi have constantly been under attack recently, with the 'bhatta' mafia threatening the former to pay up exorbitant amounts of money or get killed.

Federal and Provincial Interior Ministers and extortionists are enjoying their pay and perks whereas business community is moving out of Karachi due to fear of lives.

Many traders have already left and settled in Islamabad and the rest are also planning to move, which will create more unemployment in Karachi.

If government wants, they can fix the extortionists in 24 hours but the actual problem is that there is no will and therefore there is no way to stopped the extortionists and arrest them and put them behind the bars, but political consideration is the biggest hurdle for the political government to decide one way or the other.

Had it been any Army Rule in the country, I would have loved to see how many extortionists have sent the "chits" for extortion.
