KARACHI:

The Ministry of Commerce has terminated the contract of Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) chief executive Tariq Iqbal Puri; following which two top slots in the TDAP have become vacant within a short period of time.

It should be noted that TDAP secretary Muhammad Javed Khan’s contract also expired on June 24. According to a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Commerce on July 6, the prime minister’s principal secretary had recommended termination of Puri’s services. A note to this effect was issued on July 5, after which immediate steps were taken for Puri’s removal.

Puri had joined TDAP in October 2010 as its chief executive. During his tenure, his services helped Pakistan export non-traditional goods to new markets. He is also credited with increasing Pakistan’s presence in the Chinese markets, and helping normalise trade relations with India.
