The ‘I can’t do anything about it’ attitude prevalent throughout the country is a serious sign of societal selfishness which, if there is ever to be any kind of enduring peace, must change and change fast. Living in a land of violence is no easy matter and one has to be strong enough to endure everything that comes his or her way. But enduring and stubbornly ignoring reality are two completely different things.
This ‘I’m all right Jack’ frame of mind is nothing more than blatant negativity. The longer chaos is allowed to rampage unchecked, the more widespread and deep-rooted it will become. Expecting the shockingly overburdened armed forces and largely corrupt police force to keep an ever-burgeoning population of over 180 million people under peaceful control is asking for a miracle which will not, by any stretch of the collective imagination, happen on its own.
Of course, the general populace should not be expected to take matters into its own hands — although, this is exactly what is happening in tribal areas. Willingly, or as a result of governmental pressure, tribal lashkars — both armed and unarmed — are engaged in a struggle to keep their areas Taliban-free. However, they should pressurise the authorities to tackle the deteriorating situation head on and should, at the very least, stand up and speak out. There is clearly not much — if anything — to be achieved on a one-to-one basis. Anyone who has the guts to personally stand up and speak out should do so in the hope that others will see the light and follow their example.
The increasingly critical situation can only be seriously challenged if and when people are actively prepared to push for necessary salvation together, which — given the self-destructive degree of selfishness that permeates each and every societal level in these dark and dismal times — is, sadly, highly unlikely to happen.
The mere handful of political activists attempting to promote revolution as the answer to our current plight do not hold the answer. It is only necessary to revisit the failed revolutions of the Arab Spring to see this. Any such move would expand violence and bloodshed to an untenable degree, with innocent victims paying the price, as can be witnessed even today.
The only plausible and sensible way to tackle the ongoing violence is via the concerted efforts of those few stalwarts prepared to put their lives on the line in the name of peace. It is time that whoever these saviours are, shed their inhibitions and openly get to work.

@Arindom India was always a country for Hindus and continues to be. Any doubt left is rermoved by post @sidewinder above. Secular is a good term to fool people. Having lived in amreeka for almost 5o years I can do without close minded thinking that your patriotism might demand of you. Be well and be happy if you can.

This is what women believed fifty years back and compare them to our present lot. I was quite young at the time but remember when women stormed outside the National Assembly. The NA use to be near Lalkurti, Rawlapindi where later on National Defense College was established. It was a library before the NA moved-in there. I do not know how that place is being used now. Please also see Mr. Masih-ul-Rehman's (deputy leader of opposition) statement regarding foreign wives of Pakistani diplomats. Now the respected members of the NA are dual nationality holders. we are in reverse gear in every sense of the term.
@pmbm:
Dear - forget your Pakistan text books for a moment!!
Hindustan ( from Hindu) originally stood for the people who resides by the Sindhu ( present day-Pakistan)....if anything what you call Pakistan was origin of name Hindu!!
btw - after 1947 - India/Bharat/Hindustan was not created for 'Hindus'. In 1947 undivided India was a secular entity - it was Pakistan which wanted to become a "Muslim" country. India/Bharat?Hindustan continued to remain secular to this day.
I'd advise you to read unbiased global History of the subcontinent - not Pakistan text books please!
@sidewinder Sir, You proved my point that 2 countries created in 1947 are based on religion one for hindus and other for muslims, no matter what names they have now or had before. Good Bye
@pmbm, your comments on the antiquity of name Bharat or Bharatvarsha, are nothing but an attack on sanity. If i am not wrong you want to convey that Bharat or India is a comparatively recent development.lets see what puranas says about it(these are more than 2000 years old)
This country is known as Bharatavarsha since the times the father entrusted the kingdom to the son Bharata and he himself went to the forest for ascetic practices —Vishnu Purana (2,1,32) uttaraṃ yatsamudrasya himādreścaiva dakṣiṇam varṣaṃ tadbhārataṃ nāma bhāratī yatra santatiḥ "The country (varṣam) that lies north of the ocean and south of the snowy mountains is called Bhāratam; there dwell the descendants of Bharata." i cant help if you still need some CONCRETE EVIDENCE.
@sidewinder you would be right if you can delete 300 yrs of british control. Even before it was not Bharat but HINDUstan.
@pmbm When Pakistan was created for Muslims, Bharat was created for Hindus my dear, Bharat was created thousands of years ago and it was created for all the Bharatwasiz.
Solution is simple: Acceptance and action.
1) Acceptance that the very foundation of Pakistan is a communal demand. The action is to make Pakistan a secular state by copy and pasting India's constitution and then replacing the word India with Pakistan.
2) Legislate tough Terror laws and make sure the all powerful Military is not all powerful anymore. This will allow the secular Government to go after militants of all sort.
The rest will fix by itself over a period of time. But, I don't think there is any chance of the above things happening.
You can start by investigating the karachi control room where the mumbai attack was engineered. Lets not talk in the air - for Pakistan to truly fight its demons - it will have to confront squarely the overt and covert wars it has fought with india - somehow - 17 soldiers can be beheaded and no one raises a word of protest - but a poor man caught and convicted mistakenly for some acts of terrorism should not be released - because he happens to be indian. The back links of faisal shahzad were investigated with uncommon haste but if it comes to Mumbai - god help us if pakistan moves an inch.
World should work to 'Roll Back' Pakistan's "lsamisation Program" instead of 'Nuclear Program'.......
We know and agree with what you have said. But what is the solution? One must offer some concrete suggestions and solutions.
Overburdened armed forces ??? Overburdened with what ??? Building golf courses or housing schemes ??? Or maybe they are overburdened by their efforts in building and supporting DPC like creatures which are one of the root causes of our problems !
I agree with the posts above. There is not much that I can add. Thanks and let us hope for the best. I have a funny feeling that the real bad days for Pakistan have not even started yet.
When Pakistan was created for Muslims, Bharat was created for Hindus. Does religion advocate killing--'honor' or otherwise? does it teach rape and thievery, cheating and coveting that does not belong to you?. IT DOES NOT. Obviously 'muslims' who commit these abominations do not have knowledge of their religion. Each Muslim need to understand his/her religion and see how they can contribute towards welfare of the society.
@mr. righty rightist: Religion has destroyed Pakistan. I agree.
Fix your curriculam, textbooks and schools. Fix the madarasas That will be the most important gift you can give to the next generation of Pakistanis.
The word you didnot mention is "FEAR". Fear pervades everything. No one protested the killing of soldiers by the Taliban. No one protested the killing of Taseer and kidnapping of his son. No one protests violation of minorities' rights. No one protests the religious police!! FEAR. Even the Government and the Army are fearful. What is everyone so fearful about? Why?
Well Madam, I am drunk and I am going to tell the truth.
In a drunken stage, animosity is reduced to zero. I can tell you with 100000% confidence that I love any human being belonging to any faith as long as he's rational.
Now think about it. How irrational is a country created on the basis of religion. With all due respect, I'm sorry madam, don't you see the root cause?
You can shout back. However, every honor killing, every rape due to sexual repression, every murder due to greed, has a religious connotation, madam.
And in this case, you know it.
Well said but who will tie the bell around cat's neck? We have accumulated so much from alien Bedouin culture that I do not see any possibility of reversal. You say a word, it is responded in some Arabic expression, you hug your sister on your return from abroad after long, it is un-Islamic, you wear civilized dress, and it is violation of Haddith. You brush your teeth and someone will suggest you to use Miswak. The only thing Islamic to these folks is to marry four wives at least two of whom should be less than half of your age and preferably a third or a quarter of you age. Also ask them to wear shuttlecock burqa and walk behind you. You pay zakat but cheat on state taxes, grab some orphan or widow's property but go for pilgrimage. I am just frustrated with all things happening in Mulk-e-Aziz. You may have a hope of reversal, I sure DO NOT.
What is the point of this opinion piece ?
