Evaluation: ‘1,404 wanted men arrested till May’

RPO says crime rate in the region has decreased this year.

BAHAWALPUR: As many as 1,404 wanted men, including 177 court absconders, were arrested in Bahawalpur district in the first five months of the year, a statement issued by Regional Police Officer Ahmad Ishaaq Jahangir said on Sunday.

It further said that almost 15,000 criminal complaints were registered in Bahawalpur district during this period. Comparing figures from the same months in 2011 (14,970 cases), it said, crime rate in the region had decreased this year (14,512).

In particular, kidnapping cases had decreased, it said. Cases involving property disputes had, however, increased (4,252). There were 398 robberies this year and 418 last year.

So far, police have recovered 128.5 kilograms of explosive material, 13 rifles, 67 rifles, 136 guns, 88 revolvers, 775 pistols, 402 carbines, a bomb and an anti-aircraft gun during raids and checking at pickets. Also, police seized 9.52 kg opium, 206.6 kg hashish, 7.69 kg heroin, 402 kg hemp, and 73,896 bottles of liquor and 32,796 litres of lahan. As many as 432 men were arrested for troublemaking while drunk.

As many as 306 members of 86 criminal gangs were arrested till May 31. During police confrontation, two police officials were injured, 13 criminals killed, one injured and nine arrested. Police also recovered 25 stolen vehicles.

The RPO hoped crime in the region would be further reduced over the year. He said that police were making efforts to make Bahawalpur a crime-free area.
