LAHORE:

The pedestrian bridge in Harbanspura that collapsed on Thursday, killing one man, gave way when the truck’s dumper struck the bridge, says the preliminary report prepared by the Chief Minister’s Inspection Team. The truck driver had died in the accident. The team, headed by Najam Saeed, submitted the report to the chief minister on Friday. The report says that samples have been sent for testing and the results will help the team in fixing responsibility for the accident.

It also recommends that all such bridges across the province be inspected on an ‘emergency basis’ so that such incidents are avoided in the future. It has been proposed that a team comprising the National Logistics Cell (NLC), the Communication and Works (C&W) Department and the National Engineering Services of Pakistan (Nespak) engineers should conduct the inspections.

How can the bridge contractor be held responsible f the truck's bumper hit the bridge? No pedestrian bridge in north america is meant to withstand this type of accident but only in Pakistan would people blame the contractor instead of blaming the bad driver.
