Hajvery Town resident Muhammad Hanif wed his daughter Safia to Muhammad Rafiq, who tried to kill her 12 days ago by strangling her with her dupatta while the girl was asleep. Safia was brought to the local hospital where doctors said her brain had stopped functioning due to suffocation.
Hanif registered a case against his son-in-law and police arrested the man but Hanif insists the police are trying to let off. “They are trying to declare him innocent in spite of what he did to my daughter. She didn’t strangle herself in her sleep!” Hanif said.
The investigation officer Tahir said that the police could only continue with the case if they had a statement by Safia “Since she is brain dead we cannot pursue the case,” he said.
On the other hand, doctors said that Safia would never be able to speak coherently even if she recovers. Safia’s family have said that the police are under political pressure and are letting off the accused. They have appealed to the Punjab chief minister to intervene.
