ISLAMABAD:

Deaths by drowning in Rawal Lake during the last few days have failed to move the authorities concerned to take steps to prevent them. On Saturday, another young boy drowned in the lake while his brother and a friend were rescued alive after the boys got trapped in deep waters.

Muhammad Arsalan (15), a resident of sector I-10/1, drowned in the lake while his younger brother Muhammad Salman and a friend who was with them survived, said the Secretariat police officer investigating the case. Arsalan’s body was later retrieved by divers.

The three friends went swimming in the artificial lake and dived in from the area referred to as ‘Bangladesh point’ by local fishermen. Unaware of the depth of the water from that side, the three boys moved into deeper waters and failed to get out.

They started calling for help but it arrived too late for Arsalan. The police officer said there were no boards or signs in the area warning people to avoid diving or swimming there.

The body of the deceased boy was moved to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) mortuary. The family said they would collect it on Sunday morning for burial, the police said.

Last Tuesday, two boys from the same neighbourhood as Arsalan drowned in Rawal Lake. However, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Punjab Agriculture Department seem unmoved.

(The police officer said there were no boards or signs in the area warning people to avoid diving or swimming there.) A case should be filed against the culprits and they should be hanged publicly.
