A seminary teacher has been arrested by Shujabad police for damaging the left eye of an eight-year-old student.
Police have yet to register an FIR against Qari Ismaeel. They say they have postponed the registration of the FIR until a medical report is available from the Shujabad tehsil headquarters (THQ) hospital where the child, Abu Bakr, was referred for medical examination on Thursday.
THQ hospital Medical Officer Idrees Bhatti told The Express Tribune the child’s eye had been badly damaged from the beating. He said a medical report would be issued on Friday after a detailed examination by an eye surgeon. “The eye specialist will be in a better position to tell if the child will be able to see from the affected eye or mot,” he said.
Child’s father Muhammad Rafiq told the Tribune that he was beaten as a punishment for his absence from the seminary on Wednesday.
He alleged that the seminary was not registered with the government but said that most poor people enroll their children there because there was no school in the vicinity.
SHO Fayyaz Khan claimed that the cleric had confessed during questioning to beating the child.
Child sent with father
In another incident, a child, who claimed to have escaped detention at a seminary in Kukar Hata village, was handed over to his parents on Thursday.
Muhammad Hussain, president of Brick Kilns Association in Multan, said the child, Muhammad Ali, 11, had come to his kiln and asked for work on Wednesday. He said when he asked the child about wounds on his arms and body he told him that he had escaped from a seminary where he was kept in chains for four days.
“He (the child) said he did not return home fearing that his father might take him back to the seminary,” Hussain said.
The child said he had broken the chains using an axe he found at the seminary. He said several other students were held in chains at the seminary.
He said the cleric had chained him as soon as his father left him at the seminary four days ago.
His father Muhammad Iftikhar reached Multan on Thursday morning after Hussain called and informed him about his child. Iftikhar said he would not report the matter to the police.

@Ali: Don't think you understand 'honor killing'. The 'christian' (your description) man who killed someone who was in the process of molesting his infant daughter was not involved in an 'honor killing'. Honor killing in this instance would have been the father killing his infant daughter because she was now 'damaged goods' and he would be dishonored by her being part of his household. Take some time and learn about Islam.
@let there be peace: "Coercion ,force, punishment (even brutal ones) are all part of religious teaching/training to inculcate in children the fear, obedience and sense of duty,to achieve the “greater purpose”.
Religion is not teaching any of this and its not part of religious training/teaching. And there is no greater purpose as our Elementary bro trying imply.
Thank you for reading his comment blindly.
@Ali: what's wrong in the comment by elementary? its just simple observation and commonsense.
@Concerned: Even more ridiculous reply. My reply was to ImranCon
"@Umar: You guys shouldn’t make it such an easy target if you don’t like it."
Try to not just jump in everything before reading the whole discussion. The point made was that normally ET publishes stuff so that others can just bash religion and promote hatred against it. And if you would have read the reply by "Elementary"
"Coercion ,force, punishment (even brutal ones) are all part of religious teaching/training to inculcate in children the fear, obedience and sense of duty,to achieve the “greater purpose”. An individual is considered worthless without above traits. Severity of this punishment/force may vary according to how doggedly religious they are,but this is what all muslims believe in."
Then you would not have replied like this. Yes such news promotes religion bashing and I knew this would happen that is why I had written. Read the first comment.
@Ali: Absolutely ridiculous comeback - of course there is injustice among both religious and irreligious societies. If Americans or Russians kill, maim or abuse their children for ridiculous reasons it doesn't justify anything - they're just as bad as the Pakistani cleric. It is simply barbaric to beat a naive, defenseless child for missing a day at a seminary/school. Imagine if you sent your eight-year old son to a seminary and he returns with a damaged eye after being chained and beaten? How will you react? Civilized countries and societies don't behave like regardless of their religion. No one's bashing Islam here, rather we're just appalled at kids being bashed for stupid reasons.
@Imran Con: Is the purpose of the news is to just bash a religion and make readers anti Islamic?
If a stupid person is hitting person for any reason then his religion should not be blamed. Blame the culture and ignorance in our society.
There was recently an incident of honor killing in USA and nobody blamed religion(christianity) because he killed a person who was allegedly sexually assaulting his 5 year old daughter.
But ignorance is rampant among Pakistanis. There are so many cases that happen everyday.
