A police constable was suspended on Wednesday after several rickshaw drivers beat him up on Tuesday night for demanding a bribe from a rickshaw driver.
Zahid Gondal, the Lyallpur Town SP, told The Express Tribune that constable Aftab Ahmad had gone to see his brother, Arshad, who was admitted to a private hospital at Sargodha Road.
On his way back, he signalled a rickshaw driver and asked him to show him documents for the vehicle. The rickshaw driver, Sarwar, told him that he did not have documents on him.
Aftab then asked for a bribe. Sarwar told him that he did not have any money on him and that he would have to pick money from home.
The constable jumped onto the rickshaw and took the ride to the driver’s home in Marzi Pura. Constable Aftab continued to ask for more money.
Sarwar stopped near Rajaywala and asked several rickshaw drivers there to help him.
They responded by beating Aftab. His uniform was also torn. Some locals informed police of the incident who arrived to rescue Aftab.
Gondal said that Constable Aftab had been suspended from service with immediate effect.
He said that inquiry will be launched against him on the accusations.
“Separate cases will be registered against the constable and the people who beat him and tore his uniform,” he added.
No arrest had been made till the filing of this report.
