Canal closure?: ‘Abbasia Link Canal is our lifeblood’

RAHIM YAR KHAN: There is conspiracy to close the Abbasia Link Canal, the only source of irrigation and drinking water in the region, Anjuman-i-Tahaffuz-i- Kashtkaran (ATK) Rahim Yar Khan President Sardar Yaqoob Sindhu said on Thursday. Addressing a press conference, Sindhu said that the Abbasia Link Canal had been started in 1954 to supply water to settlements in the south-east, including Cholistan.He said the construction was stopped in 1958 due to political trouble. He said that construction restarted in 1985 and it became operational in 2004.  This brought prosperity to four tehsils in the district and irrigated the land in more than  380 villages in Cholistan, he said. He said that Minister for Agriculture Ahmed Ali Aulakh had visited Rahim Yar Khan on June 13 but did not invite local farmers for a meeting. He said that the government was planning to revive the old irrigation system and restore the Panjnand canal. He said that farmers would oppose the decision.
