One of the prime reasons why the fifth season of “Coke Studio” (CS) did not satiate the music lover’s appetite is its weak artist line-up.
Season five’s artists are either too young to have a say — at least in front of the CS house band members — or too old to bring anything fresh to the platform. However, despite the overall low appeal, rapper Bohemia manages to shine out with yet another lyrical chapter of his life and Bilal Khan finally gives us a track worth listening to.
‘Neray Aa’: Have we run out of singers?
“Neray Aa” was a cover done by Overload that garnered attention right after its release due to its unique sound and almost abstract video. However, the CS version of the song offers nothing new and is in fact a replica of the same song. The only difference is the addition of live instruments and the leading lady Rachel Viccaji. Viccaji has the capability to shout (and perhaps perform) in front of the camera, but she certainly is not capable of leading a song. She did her best to sing the Punjabi track, but her accent made the audible experience amusing (and not in a good way).
A piece of advice for Farhad Humayun: Stick to drumming and refrain from testing your vocal potential on popular forums like “Coke Studio”. Truth be told, Humayun’s red, skinny pants and strange expressions and Viccaji’s hairdo get more attention than their singing.
‘Rung’: Hadiqa Kiyani is trying too hard
Hadiqa Kiyani is a brilliant vocalist but throughout “Coke Studio”, she is trying to prove something that still remains unproven. Starting from the brilliant single “Tere Liye” right up to albums like Rough Cut and her recent works in Pashto and Persian, Kiyani has an impressive career and has shown versatility. So it’s only natural to expect something much more innovative from the singer than half-hearted renditions of Sufi kalams. In a nutshell, “Rung” is a Sufi rendition gone wrong, which dilutes the originality and essence usually found in Sufi poetry.
‘Tere Bin’: Uzair Jaswal, vocal training will do the trick
Uzair Jaswal revamped his popular song “Tere Bin” and fused it with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s song by the same name. His own song is well-written and when mixed with NFK’s song, gives off a larger-than-life feeling. Unfortunately, the problem here is that Jaswal is not a good vocalist. His voice is flat; anyone with a decent voice and no singing experience could have pulled this song off with a little help from auto-tuning.
‘Taaray’: Bilal Khan gets his act together
There is no doubt that Khan’s compositions are as mature as nursery rhymes. But like nursery rhymes, his songs are catchy too. All they need is a little tweaking by maestros like Rohail Hyatt and brilliant guitar solos by Asad Ahmed to transform into something relatively more pleasant if not outstanding.“Taaray” is a catchy song and the only other track worth listening to after Bohemia’s “School Di Kitaab”.
‘School Di Kitaab’: Bohemia’s life arc
One thing that makes this song the most memorable track of the episode is that it has more of Bohemia and less of the house band members. Even though the heavy instrumental sound seems too overpowering for a rap song, Bohemia’s “School Di Kitaab” still manages to make you nostalgic. Bohemia is someone who has provided a new language to the desi rap music genre.

On what criterion are u writing this review? All of the songs were superb, which u have so ardently criticized. Excluding, of course the song by Bilal Khan. He is not a good at all this year.
Like some songs don't appreciate others - your cup of tea may be my cup of poison - but what I LOVE is that CS has put Pakistan's positive aspects in focus for the world to listen to and appreciate making up for the negative goings on by others which bring a bad name to the country.
stop bashing coke studio, it is the best thing that ever happened to Pakistani music industry, i have my gora friends enjoying and listening to it, COKE STUDIO ALL THEY WAY!!!! BIG UP TO ROHAIL
i may not agree with da writr taray wz okay bt skool di kitab wz typical nd not new. Teray bin is so far da bst one uptill nw i do agree wd da point tht cs didnt came up wd sum gud stuff nd thtz may b bcz of da singrz dey hav chosd ths tym.
Good stuff all around! keep up...............................
I have hardly seen any positive feedback on ET regarding Coke Studio. Rafay did very negative review for episode 1 but got a bit positive on episode 2. For third episode, his negative mode has been turned on again. I have also seen a blog on ET where the blogger tried to convince that CS was making mockery etc. I am unable to understand why ET encourages such response/review to be posted on its pages. If you see online review & feedback in general (all over the world), one can note that people are die-hard fan of CS & Rohail Hyatt. I believe CS is doing wonderful job for our beloved country. ET, are you doing the same? Please think.
The writer is looking for perfection in this dying art of Pop music in Pakistan. Singers may be not up to the mark for the writer but they are getting the attention of the audience and giving reasons to cheer in this season of Coke Studio. Its proving to be a good platform for the upcoming singers and folk artists from different corners of Pakistan.
Dude, this article is so biased and without any constructive criticism. Writers reviewing music should be in touch with the reality of the Pakistani music scene and have the aptitude and qualification to critically review the arts.
Uzair Jaswal's song has made waves on TV and on social media. Towards the end of the song, there were 2-3 verses with no music, simply highlighting the singers' vocal capabilities, which have made this song the most watched song of this episode.
Personally speaking, I also felt that Bilal Khan's last song (Larho Mujhay) was better than the current one; Bohemia was great in this episode and Farhad and Rachel managed to pull off Neray Aaaaa quite well.
Is it necessary to be so negative about everything!? o_0 P.S I love uzair jaswal's voice
I enjoyed the first episode (Pere Pavandi Saan and Symt's song were very catchy and fun) but overall Coke Studio has been in a kind of rut these days. It's great that Rohail Hyatt is giving a chance to up-and-coming young artists, but where are the established pop veterans?
Faakhir, Shehzad Roy, Abrar Ul Haq and Ali Haider (to name only a few established pop artists) also deserve a chance at Coke Studio - they have proven themselves for over a decade now.
absolutle wrong analysis by the writer, i would say Rung by Hadiqa was brillient,Uzair has also very soothing voice, and i also like overload's performance as well. Its good that CS give new singers a great platform to perform.
I found the same music theme in all songs of Coke Studio, Lead guitarist "Asad" should be change with Fusion's "Shamil" with the induction of "Immo" then see the difference , I BETT !!!!.
This is the most ridiculous review i have read on any kind of music explanation. All he is just praising bilal khan and to remove doubts praising bohemia too. He performed good last year but devastating this year. He said he write songs for his age bracket people , then he must be of not more than 11 years of age. Bilal Khan hasn’t performed good at all.
Bilal khan is the worst choice of coke studio!! Kiddish songs! Get a life bilal khan and if u really want to sing please improve your flat vocals.
ET - Was your man watching the same episode? I think this was a truly innovative episode, not to mention the season thus far. The whole idea of coke studio is to bring in talent and showcase what we have. Also, just have a look at the comments on youtube!
Just for the record, please visit Youtube and find out how many views have the each song recorded. You will get an indicator of what the audience likes.
I have no clue on what planet this writer is, Tere bin is a fine song and the little bit that I know about singing (I am a classically trained singer) he has done pretty fine. God know if the writer was expecting mermaids from CS this time around. Understand that overload's "nerray aa" wasn't that great but Rachel has done pretty well. On the contrary there was absolutely nothing that I liked about Bilal Khan, God knows what the writer wants.
I only agree with the author on Uzair jaswal, that he is not a good vocalist. Other than that i don't agree with a single thing he said. Bohemia's song, in fact both songs to me are the lowest of this season, bilal's taray was okay. To me Neray aah stood out in front of all the songs, even though it was a replica, i still loved it. And by the way how many times have coke studio not done replicas? strings' titliyan, zinda hun, zeb and haniya's chup, atif's jal pari and many more. And i think none of them were very impressive. I wasn't expecting Neray aah to be good because i think coke studio doesn't do a good job with the songs that are already famous. But this time i think they did do a good job. Also i am just happy that they involved a rock song, CS usually ignores pop/rock genre.
Very bad judgement...uzair jaswal song is the best song of 2012 as its really very soothing. I am listening to this song from last 2 days and don't know how long I ll be listening to it.
Very strong vocals, the clarity he brought with his voice is worth... Uzair I never listened to you before, but hey man you are awesome, don't read ET analysis. I am sure you ll be the shining star.
Uzair Jaswal had the best performance in third episode and it is probably the best of fifth season yet. it will definitely cross the million mark before any other song of this season.
Probably the most ridiculous review I've EVER read on any kind of music. Jaswal's vocals are weak? You are probably the only person who says that. Jaswal's transitions were as smooth as any other performance on Coke Studio previously. Did you write Hadiqa Kiani is 'trying too hard'? She's a proven legend - its a different story if you dont know how strong that performance was and what it really meant for the fans. Bilal Khan got it together? I'm sure my 6 year old cousin can write better and every other underground band can sing as good as him. Tribune - never disappoints - 9 out of 10 articles are absolutely rubbish without any insight, knowledge and research. Recently, its been 10 out of 10.
There is no doubt that Khan’s compositions are as mature as nursery rhymes! period
This season looks like nursery kids fooling around !! This is nothing CS is known for !!
I find this blog quite amusing as my personal favorites from episode 3 are Neray Ah and Nindiya ke Paar. I did not like Rung much but Hadiqa was exceptional in Kamlee. My point is that choices differ. Constructive criticism is welcome everywhere (based on solid arguments) but criticizing just for the sake of blogging is not cool!
@ Tere Bin was amazing but Jaswal didn't do justice to NFAK's magic. Rung was very well done by Hadiqa Kiyani. Bohemia wasn't as impressive as last time - the rapping was a bit too vague. As for Neray Aa, I agree, Farhad Humayun should stay on drums. As for Bilal Khan, no comments.
Trust me by bringing Bohemia on Coke studio they have expanded there fan club immensely, he is star of the season.
This season is disappointing so far. In this season, we've not listened to a single masterpiece so far. Masterpieces like, Alif Allah Jugni, Saari Raat, Mori Araj, Husn-e-Haqeeqi etc.
The selection of singers in this season is very poor as well. We need singers like, Arif Lohar, Noori, Arieb Azhar, Tina Sani, Sanam Marvi etc. They did a brilliant job in previous seasons.
P.S: Bilal Khan hasn't performed good at all.
whole blog is crapppp ....
Viccaji has the capability to shout (and perhaps perform) in front of the camera, but she certainly is not capable of leading a song.
I think this is pretty rude. I am a fan of Linkin Park and Chester for some ignorant Pakistanis make Noises but for me he is the real Vocalist and for the rest of the world as well. If someone dont have some sense of music then honestly they should not write and ET should act sensible as well. Rachel is a background vocalist for a longer time and people love her voice and I dont know why such strong language have been used for her by this Critic.
@ Sameer But I agree with the fact that Coke Studio didnt do anything new with Neeray Aa and rachel should definitely not sing.Bial is a bad singer but his compositions suit his kind a music..So can't really disagree!!!
I live in Europe and my European friends listened to Naray aa and believe me i was surprised that how much they liked that song. One of DJ friend told me that he will make a remix out of it. So i think in this report they are not doing justice with Naray aa which is even making inroads in Europe. But i cannot comprehend infatuation with Bilal Khan whose performance was below par from lyrics to vocals and he is appreciated for no reason
Yeah - I think the Oopsie is right - Bilal didn't do well this time around and Jaswal was definitely better than the lot. Hadiqa did really well this time, and still no appreciation.
Tere bin was the best amongst all in this episode, dont know why ET has special "liking" for Bilal Khan. he's too monotonous.
