Not enough gas

Same fuel that runs electricity generation plants is callously diverted to run 3.5 million cars on CNG.

Letter June 09, 2012

KARACHI: This is with reference to the recent advertisements that have appeared in some newspapers on the subject of 500 MMCFD of natural gas being wasted on CNG. It actually comes as a surprise to ordinary Pakistanis that the same fuel that runs electricity generation plants serving the power needs of 100 per cent of the country’s 180 million population is callously diverted to run 3.5 million cars on CNG. This is definitely not the most productive or efficient use of a precious resource in a country torn by power riots that have led to civil unrest.

Wastage of such a huge quantity of natural gas, which could add 1600 MW of electricity to national power generation, is indicative of mismanagement and ill-thought policies. The idea of car owners saving a few rupees a day on fuel at the cost of masses struck by loadshedding is quite unfortunate. The government needs to rectify this situation because a far more urgent national priority is ensuring that there is enough gas for power generation.

Just imagine what the situation would have been if Kalabagh dam had been commissioned in 1992 and had been generating 3600 megawatts, and Bhasha dam had been near completion to generate another 4000 megawatts, gas would have been available for all other uses and we would not be talking of importing gas at three times the cost; even now mega dams are the long term solution to our energy problems, not to mention that they are the only source for water for irrigation; after all agriculture is the back bone of Pakistan's economy, contributing 24% to GDP, earning 60% of export revenues, and providing livelihood directly to 70% of the rural population, with all these figures on the decline, 12 of the 18 crore people are having to spend all their income on purchase of food, pushing 8 crore people below the poverty line compared to 5 crore in 2008, and 12 crore people have been reduced to less than two meals per day
