AUSTIN:

US Olympic swimming great Michael Phelps won the 100m butterfly and lost the 100m freestyle in his final meeting before the US Olympic swimming trials later this month.

Phelps, whose 14 Olympic gold medals include an unprecedented eight in one Games at Beijing four years ago, settled for second behind Jimmy Feigin in the 100m freestyle, Phelps clocked 49.05 seconds to Feigin’s 48.63.

Phelps said he used that setback to fuel his bid in the 100m butterfly, in which he powered to a comfortable victory in 52.02 seconds. “I didn’t swim smart or very well in the freestyle and got beaten because of that,” said Phelps. “I was angry with myself for that, and I turned it around a little in the 100 butterfly.”
