Unopposed: Nasreen Jalil elected chairperson Standing Committee on Finance

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Finance, which met at the Parliament House on Friday elected Senator Nasreen Jalil as Chairperson of the Committee. Jalil was elected unopposed.

Her name was proposed as the chairperson by Senator Islamuddin Shaikh and seconded by Senators Muhammad Talha Mehmood and Saeed Ghani.

The proceedings of the election were conducted by Secretary Senate Iftikharullah Babar, in accordance with the Rule 184 (1) of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Senate, 2012.

Members of the committee congratulated the new chairperson on her election and assured her of their cooperation in running the affairs of the committee.

Deputy Chairman Senate Sabir Ali Baloch and Leader of the House in the Senate Muhammad Jehangir Badar, who were present on the occasion, also extended warm felicitations to Senator Jalil.

Speaking on the occasion, Senator Jalil thanked the members for reposing confidence in her and reiterated her determination to work with honesty and devotion.

She said that she would seek guidance from experienced members of the committee and would take every member along.

The meeting was attended among others by Senators Sardar Fateh Muhammad Muhammad Hassani, Saeed Ghani, Osman Saifullah Khan, Haji Muhammad Adeel, Kalsoom Parveen, Islamuddin Sheikh, Muhammad Talha Mehmood besides Deputy Chairman Senate Sabir Ali Baloch and Leader of the House in the Senate Muhammad Jehangir Badar. Special Secretary Senate Amjed Pervez was also present on the occasion.

She was educated at the Adabistan-e-Soophia Lahore from where she got her primary education. She went to the United Kingdom at a very young age and was educated at the Savernake School of London for her Middle Standard education. After her return to Pakistan, she completed her secondary and higher secondary education in Karachi from 1958 to 1962. She did her Matriculation from PECHS College in 1960 then she joined Home Economics College later on she got admission in Karachi University. Her interest in learning the Occidental languages and literatures motivated her to go to Paris in 1963 and learn the French language. she came back to Pakistan after a year, rejoined Karachi University and completed her Honours in English Literature in 1966. She was amongst the first ladies of Pakistan after learning in related field to get a Commercial Pilot License in 1966 as she worked some time in Hong Kong Aero Club. She is the former deputy mayor of Karachi. Her sister is renowned architect Yasmeen Lari. (source: wikipedia)
