Search and rescue: AKUH employees drown near Hubco

Five staff members of the Aga Khan University drowned at Hawksbay near the Hubco power plant while on a picnic.

KARACHI: Five staff members of the Aga Khan University drowned at Hawksbay near the Hubco power plant while on a picnic, on Wednesday. Four of them were rescued and taken to the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) where two of them passed away. One is, however, still missing. The incident took place at around 12:30pm and the victims were part of a group of 40 people out of which 35 were AKUH employees. A search and rescue operation, with the support of the Pakistan Coast Guards and several divers, was underway to find the fifth person who was still missing till the filing of this report. The hospital did not disclose the identities of the staff members but details given by the rescue workers identified the victims as Anita, Francis, Afzal and Sana. Anita and Francis died after reaching the hospital while Afzal and Sana are still receiving treatment. The fifth person was identified as Gabriel.
