Hearing a petition against the appointment of Senator Babar Awan as the Pakistan Peoples Party vice president, the Lahore High Court on Wednesday directed a Rawalpindi senior civil judge to ensure service of court notices to Awan as he had not responded to several notices.
Advocate Afaq Ahmad filed the petition and pleaded that no political party with the name Pakistan Peoples Party was registered with the Election Commission but party heads were using the name. He said a party with the name Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarian (PPPP) was registered.
The petitioner said President Asif Ali Zardari had not issued the notification about Awan’s nomination as vice president, rather Awan had himself drafted a notification and was using it despite strong reservations of several senior PPP’s leaders.
PPP Secretary General Jahangir Badr, PPPP chairman Makhdoom Amin Fahim, PPP Information Secretary Qamar Zaman Kaira and Babar Awan have been named respondents in the petition.
The petitioner requested the court to issue directions to respondents to submit the record of notification of Awan. He also requested the court to direct the Election Commission to submit details regarding the office bearers of PPPP and the registration of parties with Election Commission. The court will resume on June 26.
