KARACHI:

Witnesses came forward on Saturday to testify about the events leading to the kidnapping and murder of a young man, Sohaib Adil, in 2009.

The case is being heard by Judge Ghulam Mustafa Memon in Anti-Terrorism Court III. The accused men, including Rashid Baloch, were also present in court.

According to newspaper accounts printed at the time, 18-year-old Adil was kidnapped and killed in Karachi on May 7, 2009.

In the courtroom, a relative provided a blow-by-blow account of how he learnt of the kidnapping from Adil’s father.

On May 14, the kidnappers reportedly called Adil’s family and asked them to bring Rs500,000 to Liaquatabad. The money was handed over. Following the drop-off, the kidnappers remained in touch with the family.

However, on May 21, 2009 the family was told that Adil’s body had been found from the Lyari naddi. Although the alleged kidnappers had told the family not to inform the police, they enlisted the authority’s help and reported the kidnapping.

Baloch and his accomplices are accused under sections 365-A, 302 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code as well as the Anti-Terrorism Act.
