MULTAN:

Four people were injured on Friday night when a scuffle broke out after the girl’s family refused to marry her off. The groom, Ijaz, led a marriage procession to the Bibi Pakdaman area to be married to Rubina, daughter of Mohammad Bakhsh.

Bakhsh told The Express Tribune that the marriage was agreed on the condition that the groom’s side will arrange to give his daughter a furnished one-kanal house ahead of the wedding. “When the marriage procession arrived without fulfilling our condition, we refused,” he said.

“The groom was found to be poor. He works as a mechanic. His family broke the terms of the marriage,” he said. Javed, the groom’s brother, said that the family had sent a delegation with a request that the marriage be allowed to go ahead and that the condition will be fulfilled later. “The bride’s side refused. That was when a fight broke out. Some women in the families also got involved,” he said.

Four people were injured from the groom’s side, including his mother Rozina, he said. “Police were called by witnesses. When they arrived the families did not want to be made public or to prosecute,” he said.

The injured were taken to a private hospital for first aid, he said. Talking to The Tribune, Ijaz, the groom-to-be, said that the families had agreed to let a panchayat resolve the matter.
