Football: Scholes commits for another year

MANCHESTER: Veteran midfielder Paul Scholes signed a one-year contract extension with Manchester United, revealed manager Sir Alex Ferguson. The 37-year-old came out of retirement in January and put in some excellent performances to earn himself another year at the only club he has played for and for whom he made his first-team debut in 1993. “It has been done, Scholes is staying,” said Ferguson. Scholes’s performances may even earn him an international recall from new England coach Roy Hodgson for Euro 2012, although he retired from international football after Euro 2004. Ferguson, who is reportedly against the idea of Scholes being called up by Hodgson, believes he could get up to 30 games out of the midfielder next season. “He now realises if he plays 25 or 30 games next season, they will be of real quality.”
