Sri Lanka tour: Snub only a temporary setback, says Wahab Riaz

Not being in the squad will not break down my resolve, says Wahab as the fast-bowler vows comeback.

Snubbed fast-bowler Wahab Riaz has termed his omission from the Sri Lanka bound squads a temporary setback, saying he will regain his place in the side by showing his worth though sheer hard work.

The left-armer failed to find a place in any of the three squads despite selectors opting for separate teams for all formats. The 26-year-old filled the vacuum left by the bans handed out to Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif and a five-wicket haul in the 2011 World Cup semi-final against India predicted a bright future for Wahab.

However, his selection has been inconsistent since the loss against India as he dispelled the impression that he is nearing the end of his career and wants to hang up his boots. His last international appearance for Pakistan was a disappointing performance against India in the Asia Cup where he was smashed for 50 in four overs.

“I am as passionate as I was before I made my debut,” Wahab told The Express Tribune. “I am determined to prolong my career and the snub for a couple of series cannot break down my determination and resolve. Good days come with the bad and that’s how the life of a player goes.

“In fact, the snub has given me the motivation to work extra hard and that’s exactly what I’ll be doing to regain my place in the national squad.”

Wahab, who has played 25 One-Day Internationals and seven Tests for Pakistan, also ruled out reports that the snub has forced him to take a back seat from cricket.

“I am playing club matches continuously in Lahore and will also be taking part in the Pakistan Champions League that is to be held in Karachi. I will play domestic cricket and will continue to play wherever I get a chance until I regain the selectors’ confidence.”

Fast-bowler available for county stint

Meanwhile, the left-armer, who enjoyed an impressive county season with Kent last year, has made himself available for the current season as well.

“Kent were interested earlier and were seeking my availability. At that time, I was expecting a place in the national side so I declined their offer. But since I am not currently in any of the squads for Sri Lanka, I am available and will accept an offer.”
