It is confession time and the state needs to come clean. Our politicians, intelligentsia and opinion-makers will have to be honest for a change. The fact is that the Pakistani state is in really bad shape and only honesty can save us now.
If truth be told, the squandering and the inefficient use of the state’s productive economic resources during the 10-year-long war on terror has made us a state whose future is as hazy as the interpretation of its history. Leakages have been immense and no attention has been paid to the wealth creation or actual capacity-building for such a venture. Financially, we are sinking below the rock bottom, if such a thing is even possible.
Since our ghairat goes somewhere to sleep when it comes to the responsibilities of a citizen to pay taxes, the Pakistani state remains what Nora Hamilton once called a “rentier state”. And as we are gifted with a finance minister who cannot take a stand on simply anything, our economic outlook is not going to change in the short term. Of course, remittances still keep coming in but compared with the achievements of other countries of the region they are not enough to substantially bolster the elements of state power. Moreover, inefficiency breeds corruption and unfortunately the very word has been haunting us for the last four years.
Thanks to the inefficient use of available resources, a certain lack of imagination on the part of our decision-making generals of the recent past and ultimately the debate over the defence budget, our war-making machinery is rapidly falling into disrepair. Add to it, the tragic cost of fighting two simultaneous insurgencies in more than half of the country’s land mass and you can foresee an unmitigated disaster brewing. If, during General Musharraf’s era we had paid attention to procuring counter-insurgency equipment like SWAT gear and night vision rather than staying obsessed with the F-16s and the P3C Orions, we would have been better placed to flush out the miscreants. But we are not.
Meanwhile, internally, we have lost cohesion and forgotten about the effective use of diplomacy. Within only a decade, we have managed to radicalise the people of Balochistan, lost control in the tribal areas and left the people of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa weak-kneed before the militants. Someone needs to answer for such a quick erosion of the state’s writ. What bigger joke could we have about it than the constant presence of Osama bin Laden on our soil?
And the ill-timed debate over the government’s legitimacy is hurting not only the state but the ruling party as well. It is a shame that the party that once won us back our 90,000 prisoners of war at Simla is now squabbling over political spoils and electoral prospects. Don’t get me wrong. I am all for democracy, but at this stage we cannot afford this crisis of legitimacy. And those who have created this crisis in their single-minded pursuit of the ruling party will also never be forgiven by history.
In short, my dear sirs, things are so bad right now that we need to come out of our stupor right now. It is true that the US can be blamed for our sufferings but time for apportioning blame will come much later. Right now, the policy confusion and all pervasive cluelessness is hurting us beyond anything. Pakistan will have to tell its people why it is important to restore the Nato supply routes and then do it immediately. We cannot afford to be isolated any further.

One can understand the indignation felt by all USof A citizens at Farrukhs allusion to them. Unfortunately, the general masses had no idea of the seeds of destruction sown by the good old US of A till it came to haunt them back. We were the bulwark in the fight against communism even before the Afghan Jihad. Do 3rd rock from the sun, john b,hunter punter or others remember gary powers? our sins in supporting a fickle know it all have come back to haunt us. A good piece as usual,Farrukh.
@Ejaaz: And political government's incompetence/misgovernance and spiralling corruptions and apathy for the woes of common man are conspicuos by their absence in your list of problems.Your analysis, sir, has a large hole in it. Financial misappropriation leading to circular debt that is aggravating our energy crisis(10-12 hours of load shedding) is no bother.stagflation ,rising debts, shattered economy that has made the life of ordinary man miserable didn't deserve a passing comment. Misgovernance which is leading to collapse of one institution after another : whole government machinery getting rotten(politicized) from police to education to lower courts, but nothing matters ,it's down with the military and judiciary(which surprisingly you didn't mention on this occasion) and everything will be alright..
You sir may see terrorist in waziristan top of the list in your problems to address but we as ordianry citizens worry about the light in our house and food on the table for our children this evening.
@ijazmir: "....Arab is Arab and foreigner is a foreigner do not except him to become Arab..... "
I am not wanting to doubt about authenticity of the quote but would like some more information as to when and under what circumstances was it said.
Thanks.
@Hunter Punter Pakistan and India comes the from same stock, you think Indians are not crock and cheater, They are ahead of their Pakistani counterparts. Pick up any paper stories full of rape and cheating and bribes.there is no respect for women. At least Pakistanis have fear of God. They need right leadership which will bring them to the right path.
@ijazmir: Very correct assessment. Most south asians are poor and strugglers and are cheats and frauds. They all pray to God and go cheat the next moment. This is true of the politicians, powerful elite and the Businessmen. Pakistanis are so keen to be Arabs, because they want to be identified with the power and riches of the Arabs, despite the ill treatment meted out to other Asians. Muslims in the Subcontinent never had any problems not just with their different sects, but never with hindus, budhists, sikhs or christians. That is because the cultures are so similar. see the music, food, clothes, social celebrations, festivals, Pakistan is at cross roads and struggling to seek its independent identity. Whether it will succeed, only time will tell. Just as products seek differentiation and unique positioning , countries try to do the same. Unfortunately pakistan sought an identity based on Nukes, Army and Sponsors of Terrorism. All of these are completely unacceptable in the 21st century. That is why pakistan as a product is being completely rejected by the world.
Why start now? We are never going to start telling the truth as it would show our real face. We have been hiding facts about what we did in E. Pakistan to how OBL was living in an army base to the creation and recognition of Taliban and terrorists. Nothing and I repeat nothing would ever come out of our establishment.
@author and other writiers,
I think the Truth is, You have ruined your country due to imparting wrong education for long long time.
I think it takes atleast 2~3 decades for pakistan to get normal as any other muslim country (becoming secular country is quite impossible, even india is struggling hard from 60yrs).
after browsing to see a ray of hope of change, looking for justice for mumbai attack victims, getting bored now,
don't think any body in the world would be looking out for positives in pakistan anymore.
@kaalchakra thou art the best troll
@ kaalchakra, this is the exact thing the author is speaking about. False bravado and blindness. I guess you are reading too much from Riaz Haq's blog. Nothing you write makes sense.
@kaalchakra: Cheers for trying to uplight the spirits of the downtrodden nation!! Seems that the"global Idea" will make pakistan the boss of the world!!
Truth is self destruction. We Pakistan's do not pay tax, We steel electricity,We are dishonest in Business,We pray five time think who to cheat next. our version of Islam is wahhabism recently imported from our oil rich mentor. We are South Asian Muslims we had centuries old culture, Muslims in subcontinent had no problem between different sects of Islam there was harmony since we imported Wahhabi version. Prophet Peace upon him.said that Arab is Arab and foreigner is a foreigner do not except him to become Arab. But We south Asians wants to be Arabs this is the truth.
@Ejaaz: Brilliant comment.
50 years hence where will Pakistan be?
As leader of the Islamic nations, Pakistan's trajectory cannot be that of Bhutan and Bangladesh or of India. Pakistan is not the name of just some land. It is a global idea, the dream of a civilization, the natural heir to the sort of glory that has never been found elsewhere.
Farrukh sahib, You want confession time then speak without your knees wobbling.
Why is Pakistan in trouble? The answer is simple but nearly impossible to swallow for us. Why did we feel the need for "the objective resolution"? Why did we declare the Ahmedis non-muslims? Why have we been killing Shias around the country? Why are the Hazaras being killed? Why do a majority of Pakistanis still admire Al Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden even when a majority of arabs reject them as takfiris? Why is it that our very popular Imran Khan is terrified of saying a word against the Jihadis? Why is it that our Generals still dream of accomplishing the dream that Zia set into motion of creating a core of Khilafat with Pakistan at it center and bringing Afghanistan, and central Asian countries within its ambit? As it is, we are not ready to look at ourselves and our history honestly, and most of us still prefer to dream of "our" glory gone by.
Even if we suddenly change and start afresh, it will take a minimum of 50 years to climb out of the hole we are in. Just consider, what it will take to find qualified teachers to teach Pakistani kids the simple math and language required to function in the modern world. And then think where our neighbors (including Bangladesh, the basket case) will be in those 50 years while we are trying to set our house in order.
The 1st paragraph is as inspiring as it can get. Then comes the shocker, ' it is true that US can be blamed for our sufferings...' A classic example of the proverbial slip between the cup and the lip, as someone has already pointed on this forum.
@Falcon: "they are more concerned about you making a remark in passing about U.S. responsibility "
It's abnormal to blame others in "passing" for your own misdeeds. That symptom shows a problem with the mindset which blames people in passing. Do the right thing. Take responsibility for your actions.
I agree with the isolation thing completely. It is false bravado and utterly foolhardy.
@Falcon That "remark in passing" is indicative of the national ailment - not taking any responsibility for their own actions. It is the difference between a person hearing a critique of themselves and saying, "yes, I acknolwedge these faults wihin me and now that I know that they are, I can begin to improve myself" OR saying "yes, these are problems, but the fault is yours for showing me a mirror". It is the proverbial slip between the cup and the lip!
You really want to know what is holding us back...look at the first few comments...they are more concerned about you making a remark in passing about U.S. responsibility than the rest of the article...when the most trivial of issues bother the brightest of intellectuals...nations end up focusing on wrong priorities and so is our case...whether it be nuclear weapons, strategic depth, or F-16s
Interesting thing mentioned is the 90000 soldiers who surendered when we were fighting India and still we think that we should fight a clossal country as India instead we should aim at developing our country
Farrukh, truth from Pakistan establishment is a rarest of rare phenomenon. I commned your courage to bring this subject out in the open. History and narrative of Pakistan both are based mainly on lies.
Truth, nothing but the truth and the whole truth alone will set Pakistan free from its never-ending turmoil.
"It is true that the US can be blamed for our sufferings". Blame anyone, one likes, but the Truth is that the people at large who suffer most are the ones who really are worthy of taking blame for every thing they endure. Every philosopher, thinker, intellectual interested in the well being of the people at large, have come and gone, suggesting to the people to come together regularly to unite. Unite to organize themselves. Organize to take charge off their collective life and destiny. What more, even the Lord, Lord Almighty invited people to come together to rally round no one but Him. Rally round to unite and thus take charge of their life and destiny. Are people doing so? No. So why would they not fall slave to the slave takers? Did those Arabs who responded to Lord's commands and created a society of the people, by the people, for the people endure slavery of any slave takers? No. Why? They were united. When people are united in raising their voices and act in unison, then no slave taker can ever dare to take such a people slave. So my very humble plea to the people is to start organizing themselves in the localities where they live. They should always be careful not to allow anyone to become their Chachah, Mamah, Dadah, Choudhry etc. They should rely on collective leadership of the intellectuals among them. Have they not tried every system that has failed them? So here is a system, tried and tested, never to fail people. Why? People themselves become in charge of their life and their destiny. Are people willing to take charge of their life and destiny? If they want it, the way is open for them. They should start organizing themselves from today, from this very evening. If they want it.
"It is true that the US can be blamed for our sufferings but time for apportioning blame will come much later."
In what way the US is to be blamed for PAK mess?
OBL, sectarian violence, Baloch issues, Target killing, LeT, Hafeez, PAK economic inefficiency, military build up of the last sixty years with no real purpose, building nukes whose fall out is right in PAK back yard, suicide bombers, stealing gas and electricity, destruction of public property, corrupt police and courts, apathy of the society, mass illiteracy, endemic polio and measles and others are all US fault?
If US is at fault, then why everyone in PAK from PM, to FM to all newspaper editors and columnists scream for opening of NATO supply route?
The truth is PAK has no sense of national destiny for the past 20 years, and before that her destiny was enmity towards India and wishful thinking of playing larger than life role in the name of Islam.
The present day PAK was in making since 1945 and that is the truth that will set PAK free.
What is the national goal of PAK and what is she intend to contribute to the world culture, art, literature and history? For that matter, if I were to write a history of Pakistan and her influence in the world, what shall I write today?
