The police say apparently the man was not walking with the ASWJ men. They suspect he was headed towards the Sabzi Mandi close to the Abbasia Underpass from where he was arrested. The police identified the suspect as Babar, a resident of Abbasia Town. The suspect told the police he was taking the Kalashnikov to an arms shop to fix a fault in it.
The rally was a series of gatherings held in the province by the ASWJ to mark the birthday of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq, one of the four chosen companions of the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him). Malik Ishaq, leader of banned outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, addressed the rally in Rahim Yar Khan. Ishaq has 74 murder cases underway against him. He has been released by the Lahore High Court on bail.
The rally started from the Jinnah Hall and marched up to the Railway Chowk amid tight security arrangements by the district police and the ASWJ volunteers.
