ISLAMABAD: A Senate committee called on Monday for filing a treason case against Pakistan State Oil (PSO) officials involved in the award of a contract to an Israeli company in violation of all criteria and rules .

The Senate’s standing committee on interior was reviewing the PSO’s move to award the contract to Israeli company Turpak-Orpak.

Chairman of the committee Talha Mehmood said that the move had jeopardised national security and PSO, being a vital national institution, should have avoided posing such a serious security threat.

The company, he said, had been tasked with installing “sensitive equipment at various petrol pumps”.

He asked the company’s managing director to probe the matter and submit a report within 15 days.

Meanwhile, the committee also discussed a report filed by the sub-committee on interior on the issue of blockage of main roads in Islamabad.

The committee members said that state guest houses should be built in secluded areas to avoid blocking public roads.

The interior secretary said: “The construction of state guesthouses requires billion of rupees but the government lacks resources”.

A representative of the ministry of foreign affairs said that the construction of state guest-houses was not feasible, adding that over the past three years, only three heads of state had visited Pakistan.

The committee, however, said that if state guest-houses were not feasible then some alternative accommodations should be built for foreign dignitaries. In its report, the sub-committee said that the Capital Development Authority (CDA) had built a dual carriageway in front of Serena and Marriott hotels. However, Islamabad police and ICT administration have closed the northern carriageway of the road in front of Serena and a lane of the southern carriageway of the road in front of Marriott.

The committee also reviewed progress on the Bawan Shah group of companies case.
