ISLAMABAD:
The Islamabad police failed to arrest a son of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) chairman for intimidating a girl in public, despite the fact that an FIR was lodged.
The Industrial Area police registered an FIR against Asim Khan late on Tuesday for criminal intimidation on the complaint of a woman he was threatening in I-8 Markaz.
However, police sources told The Express Tribune that they are being pressurised by his father, CDA Chairman Farkhand Iqbal, to refrain from arresting Khan and to quash the FIR.
“Initially, the police were reluctant to register an FIR against him and now they have been asked not to arrest him,” said a police official requesting anonymity.
On Tuesday, when police reached the spot in response to a call from the woman, Khan allegedly abused the police and threatened them with repeated references to his father’s post and connections before senior police officials intervened.
Qasim Zia, the investigation officer for the case, said that he is in Lahore to arrest another accused and will look into the matter after he returns.
Last week, Khan was caught on tape abusing a woman and her son in front of police officials after the pair had accused him of rear-ending their car. He was driving a vehicle bearing government plates at the time, which is also illegal under cabinet rules. He had allegedly physically assaulted the pair after the accident, before fleeing the scene. The Kohsar police allegedly refused to register an FIR before a compromise was reached between the two parties.
CDA Chairman Iqbal did not answer his cell phone despite repeated attempts to contact him.
