Cricket: ‘I hope BPL doesn’t turn into ICL’

KARACHI:

Non-payment of dues owed to Pakistanis who took part in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) are fearing the worst: a repeat of the Indian Cricket League (ICL).

Players who took part in the unsanctioned ICL were not paid for taking part in the final edition – an estimated Rs 15m per player - and the fear that the money owed to them by the BPL organisers could follow that same path.

“I just hope it’s not the repeat of what happened with us in the ICL,” one of those taking part told The Express Tribune. “Hopefully, the issue will be resolved soon as we’ve suffered once before.”

The player added that the team management has assured payment since the Bangladesh Cricket Board was involved in the venture as well. “The management and organisers said that they want to avoid cases of fraud and money laundering which is why it’s taking time.”

With the 45-day day deadline for payment approaching, only 25-75% of the amount has been released, varying from player to player - star players getting more while the lesser-knowns have suffered.

Another Pakistani player who was also part of the Indian Premier League, slammed the BPL’s financial management, calling it the worst model he had seen.“It may have been a success but for us, it has been utter rubbish, especially the way we’ve been left hanging.”

Bollywood and IPL, among a few other things are a result of India's cultural vibrancy. They cannot be matched in the sub-continent, nor in Asia.

BPL is a good enterprise, but it has its limitations. BPL is not being seen by 80% of South Asia's population, for example. Comparing BPL to IPL is like comparing Lollywood to any of the India's dozen movie industries.
