ISLAMABAD:

Even though much has been stated about the domestic violence bill, many people do not seem to have understood the draft completely.

This was observed at a seminar titled, “Domestic Violence: A Legal and Sharia Analysis” held at the International Islamic University Islamabad’s Islamic Research Institute (IRI) on Thursday, as part of the university’s ongoing 24th cultural week.

IRI Fiqh and Law Department President Dr Ismatullah said that a couple should try and resolve their issues amongst themselves before consulting relatives or seeking professional help.

National Commission on Status of Women legal expert Riffat Butt cleared the misconceptions about the bill. She explained that the bill is meant only for the capital. Secondly it also addresses the problems faced by men and children, apart from women. She said the complainant is not supposed to register the complaint with the police but with the magistrate.
