The 17-metre (56-foot) Agni V, with a range of more than 5,000 kilometres (3,100 miles), was launched at 8:05 (0235 GMT) from a test site off the eastern state of Orissa.
It was an "immaculate success" and "a major milestone in India's missile programme", Defence Minister A.K. Antony said in comments released by his spokesman.
India views the 50-tonne Agni V as a key boost to its regional power aspirations and one that narrows - albeit slightly - the huge gap with China's technologically advanced missile systems.
The successful test leaves India knocking at the door of a select club of nations with inter-continental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) with ranges of up to 8,000 kilometres.
Currently only the five permanent members of the UN Security Council -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States -- possess a declared ICBM capability.
"I am announcing the successful launch of Agni V... making history and making our country proud in the area of missile technology,” said V.K. Saraswat, head of India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), which made the missile.
DRDO spokesman Ravi Gupta insisted the Agni V was a "non country-specific" deterrent, but analysts noted it extends India's missile reach over the entire Chinese mainland, including military installations in the far northeast.
Agni, which means "fire" in Sanskrit, is the name given to a series of rockets India developed as part of its ambitious integrated guided missile development project launched in 1983.
While the shorter-range Agnis I and II were mainly developed with traditional rival Pakistan in mind, later versions with a range of 3,500 kilometers are perceived as China-centric deterrents.
"The Agni V can strike targets across China, potentially freeing up other short- and intermediate-range missiles for use against Pakistan and much of west and south-central China," said IHS Jane's analyst Poornima Subramaniam.
"Extensive land- and sea-launched missile development programmes have become important elements in India's nuclear strategy, and in that context the Agni V is a significant development," Subramaniam told AFP.
Shannon Kile, an expert on nuclear weapons at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) think-tank, said Agni V was partly a "prestige" development, supporting India's aspirations to be global player.
At the same time, its increased range "will also give Indian defence force planners greater leeway about where missile launchers can be placed," Kile said.
The Agni V test came just weeks after India returned to the elite group of countries with a nuclear-powered submarine when it inducted a new vessel leased from Russia.
India has fought three wars with arch-rival Pakistan since independence in 1947, but it is China that New Delhi increasingly views as the greater long-term strategic threat.
China's military arsenal is far larger and far more technologically advanced than India's, which is why, according to Monika Chansoria, a senior fellow at the Delhi-based Centre for Land Warfare Studies, the Agni V is so important.
"What this missile does is enable India to upgrade its present strategic posture towards countries like China from one of dissuasion to one of credible deterrence," Chansoria said.
India and China fought a brief but bloody war in 1962, and 15 rounds of talks on their frontier disputes have yielded no progress, amid fears in New Delhi that Beijing is becoming increasingly assertive about its territorial claims.

Today's report: A Chinese missile scientist says that the actual range of Agni V is 8000 km. According to him the only reason India downplayed the range was it did not want to startle the countries that would fall in the higher range. Perhaps part of psy-warfare! India has not denied the statement yet!
@ALI: With neighbors like Pakistan and China, we don't have a choice.
Shame on Express Tribune. I saw comments of Mogambo approved by ET moderators. One thing i want to know, does any Indian Paper allow posting "Pakistan Zindabad" on their web???? Pathetic. Pathetic. what else can i say?
"Main Khud he hon apne aap k peechay para hua Mera shumar b to mere dushmanon mei hai"
@ALI: Perhaps you should reserve that comment for your army/country who spends $2.5 billion per year on nuclear weapons while living on IMF funds..Lol...
@Karachiite: thanks friend! I am sure you can also make a similar missile. But it is an achievement for the country and more so for the scientists who wanted to prove something. It's nothing more than that!
@asim: Please please don't waste your money! Sincere advice! Nobody is going to attack Pakistan!
@Adil: I like Zaid Hamid! Don't worry he springs surprises! As long as he is not harming anyone we need not worry! And I'm sure he means no harm. He is funny! Ha! Ha!.
700 million without toilet, mass malnutrition, extreme poverty, 75% earns less than $2 a month and 50% earns less than $1 a month. yet these chankya following indians have all the money to spend on weapons of mass destruction
@khaliq
dude come out of delulion.there is nothing that pakistan can not achieve.it is only a matter of days that pakistan will be testing a missile with longer range than the agniV, as we did in 1998 when india tested nukes.
Sorry to burst your bubble mate but ICBM is not just 'another' technology which you can make over months. Pakistan has not even made a satellite launch vehicle(it uses china to deploy satellites),whereas India has PSLV which have been used by NASA,Israel,Bulgaria and Germany to launch their satellites.It has 98% success rate. Not to mention the GSLV which has cyrogenic engine which only 4-5 nations have in this world. And i forgot to mention that agni V can also host MIRV payloads with little modifications :)
Go and celebrate your achievement on your OWN newspaper. What can I say trolls will be trolls. Congrats though.
To All those who remind of India's poverty... Please note this missile costs just 1/10th as compared to costs incurred by developed countries for similar missiles... That way, India has well made it possible without crossing its limits.
Indians stop trolling on Pakistani website.
@Ghaznavi: Please read the news. http://news.yahoo.com/india-tests-nuke-capable-missile-able-hit-china-034308390.html
@somebody: dude come out of delulion.there is nothing that pakistan can not achieve.it is only a matter of days that pakistan will be testing a missile with longer range than the agniV, as we did in 1998 when india tested nukes.
why should India not develop itself in the field of defence or space for that matter...India doesn't lack funds to remove poverty its the politicians who are not taking steps and are filling their own pockets...I agree India has massive poverty and even the funds are allocated for removal of poverty but due to corruption it never reaches there....but it doesn't mean India should stop developing in other fields..
@Muhammad Rizwan Ali
Haha, Indian living in fool paradise, every body knows, what is China, how they are doing, India just like peanuts for them, let Indian stay in fool paradise
If it is true then pakistan should let loose of thought of competing with India,as it is miles ahead in EACH AND EVERY aspect. Unlike pakistan and like china india has a fast growing economy,a growing prosperous middle class and an emerging economic superpower.
let Indian stay in fool paradise
If you replace indians with pakistan or even more better your name then it would be 100% correct.
@Muhammad Rizwan Ali: Remember "Kisi ke baade hoone sae aap chote nahin ho jaate". Just because China is way ahead of us, it does not mean we stop walking. Or does it?
Haha, Indian living in fool paradise, every body knows, what is China, how they are doing, India just like peanuts for them, let Indian stay in fool paradise
@Ghaznavi Isn’t this a spitting copy of a Russian missile??
Most missiles are splitting copies of each other. lol
for all those who remind India about its poverty and other problems...
friends, when you raise a family, you not only feed it, but also take measures to keep it safe........you may eat one roti less. but can you compromise on safety ?
Russian technology reconditioned with American help. Isn't this a spitting copy of a Russian missile?? I guess Indian scientists gave up making a truly indigenous missile after they completely failed in many attempts. Why doesn't India outsource its defence to US?
All the billions of Indians and peace-loving people around the World laud India's achievement. Mrs Indira Gandhi started the journey, Ataljee, our philosopher statesman exhibited courage in displaying before the World India's capabilities and now our scientists, inspired by the Great Visionary Dr Kalam proved that Indian scientists are no less than the best minds of the World. Fighting against poverty, ignorance and diseases is our national mission and we are well ahead in this direction with growth rate above 7% PA. We will overcome our problems and others need not emphasize over it. India knows its path and knows it well for hundreds of centuries. World should just watch and observe its unstoppable progress.Bravo Indians!!
@IBL: India has been the largest economy in the world for most part of post Christ era ie @2,000 years. Even as late as 1847, it was such until colonization destroyed it. Hence, it is in our DNA to be the world largest and prosperous economy. By 2047, India would have reclaimed back it's past glory and then some
@Watty: @IBL: Different sections of people in India are in varied stages of development and self reliance. That does not mean than India should stop all development work until all it's citizens are self reliant and sufficient. All processes are being conducted concurrently so every section of the society progresses at the same time. Even in the US, 47 million which is about 15% of the population is on food assistance, meaning dirt poor. That does not stop the country from making progress for the benefit of the remaining 85%.
Its a tussle between India and China. Though we lag behind China at present, future will not be same, lets see how long one party communist state can survive.
Pakistan (Specifically Pakistani Army not the people) was never our competitor or enemy, at most its a nuisance with lots of irritation value.
With now USA, Europe, Japan, South Korea and South East Asia on India's side, the race is only gonna hot up.
Excelsior India! Congratulations! Onwards to 10000 km Agni!
@Adil: @krishan SINGH !: Zaid Ahmed is a master of sarcasm! Keep that in mind when reading his/her posts!
@Yuri Kondratyuk
Not really, go ahead and test as many. But, last time I made fun of a Pak missile test was when Pak tested a nuclear capable missile with all of 20km range!
It's like nuking yourself!
@Afrasiab: Are you under the influence of Pakistani History books ???
@IBL, Look at the technology, if India can develop such high tech then the it is capable to reduce poverty and hunger too!
@Vigilant:

@Afrasiab:
China simply surprise-attacked an unprepared and all too trusting India in 1962.
But, Chinese tried pulling same trick at Nathu La in 1967 and at Sumdorong Cho Valley in 1985 only to lose face and beat hasty retreats. At Nathula pass, Chinese had to virtually beg India to stop after bearing the brunt of relentless Indian attack for 4 days. Even PLA’s official organ,Liberation Army Daily ended up praising the professionalism of Indian Army in 1985.
So, India not only stopped but also defeated a much bigger enemy and gained their respect in the process(along with a little territory I might add). Talking of cowardice, the first sign of one is that they fail to appreciate the virtues of their opponents. Hence, I know for sure Chinese aren't cowards.
@zaid hamid
but earth is flat!isin't it?
The Agni V success is a commendable achievement in its place. However India's greater challenge is not from China or Pakistan, it is India's own widespread poverty, malnutrition and miserable public sanitation. Unfortunately the growing numbers of the callous, corrupt rich Indians who flaunt their wealth do not care enough for their fellow citizens trapped in poverty denying them even the most basic human dignity for generations. This is intolerable and unsustainable.
@zaid hamid: I like your humour!!
It's funny how people in pakistan start barking about india's poverty when india achieves something which pakistan cannot.
No sanctions for India by USA? thats what I hate about US foreign policy...its not consistent..its different according to countries....if Iran or N Korea does this missile adventure you have USA going ballistic with sanctions, econmic isolation ,etc but if Israel or India does it, USA support them. If USA really want global peace, they should be signing treaties with ALL nuclear capable/ countries to rein in their destructive arms race...but Alas how can I expect this level of sanity from USA?
@IBL: Capture Hafiz Saeed and Please send me the money. I will use it to feed poor you you talk about. On serious note.. the spin offs from this technological are huge right from heavy satellite launching on higher orbits to development of composites which can withstand high temperatures. Who knows one day we would be making lighter and hence more fuel efficient automotive engines using these composites.
pakistan should also come up with ICMB to have a credible detterence against Israel and Europe, so no one dares attack us.
@IBL: What is the security & souverignity of a country to do with its under development. Development happens only in the atmosphere of peace & security. Now Agni V is a game changer & no hostile nations will cast an evil eye on us. Development is a long process & and we are on schedule as in 2020 India will be third largest economy & by 2050 No:1. So dont preach us about development
@ Zaid Hamid... love your sense of humour
@zaid hamid: Lol if it is fired from Pakistan but after encircling the earth it will come back to the same country however dont worry, this one is for China with love. Keep writing, love your sense of humour.
To all those who do not know @zaid hamid, he is using satire on Pakistan.
@IBL: Pakistan will soon test fire its small missile to show India its toys. Hope you can say the same for Pakistan than.
@IBL
Dude seriously? Sour grapes, is it? When everything fails, poor in India haunts you? Security is as important as the welfare of the masses and FYI, India is doing exceptionally well in both of these..Look at yourself and you will get all the answers!
Congratulations India. We're sorry for this fool named Zaid Hamid keeps on trying to compete and write silly comments. Please ignore him. We do! :) and I'm sure you can tell the level of his madness by his comment. "a missile that will circle the earth" and then? Haha.
Zaid Hamid: You sure are a funny guy! Complete one full circle of earth and hit a target in your own country? :)
Seriously, MAD doctrine is scary. At times I worry about my children and their children will be far worse off than us. What with Deforestation, countries armed to the teeth, global warming, water crisis et. al.
But, some folks have bigger things to worry about - like Religion !!!!!!!
Indian Trolls now supporting the test of new (long-range) missile.......but if the same test was conducted by Pakistan...they will be reminding us of our economic woes and poverty.....now it seems that they have forgotten that india hosts largest number of street children in the world..........
@Aquarian Truths This is missile test is CBM??......and yeah i believe u
@zaid hamid: Hehe ... that's called suicide bomb.... :)
im not finished............... our final version of JF-17 series will travel upto infinity and can be used as missiles also.
@zaid hamid,ha ha..that was a nice one dude..why dont u make a satellite which can carry missle?
@zaid hamid: Yeah, you canl make missile that can complete one full circle of earth and then can hit the launching pad straight. :)
This is for India's self defense and no country needs to worry about it as long as they are peace loving like India
@Aquarian Truths: This one is for China, our brothers and sisters in Pakistan need not worry.
No one In Pakistan is Worried After when they Saw You running from the battle field in 1962. You are telling me that once a coward is not always a coward? I don't think your nature has changed in few years. So, We chill . We know You can not do any harm ever to China.. hahaha...
@ashok sai: "Missile for Peace ! " Exactly. I agree.. Thats why Pakistan's Whole Nuclear Arsenal is towards India = For Peace as well. :) . It is to Maintain Peace with Neighbor like you .
Time to celebrate the success of "INDIGENOUS" effort by India to show the world its true potential. Mind it, India got no help from any other country to develop it. This makes it even bigger achievement.
it is ridiculous that a country which homes largest number of poors in the world is recklessly spending on weapons.according to world Bank,42% of total indian population falls below the poverty line.a report by the oxford poverty & human development states that 8 indian states have more poor than 26 poorest african nations combined.latest UNICEF data shows that one in 3 malnourished childern world wide are found in India.a sindhi writter who recently visited india writes in his book that he was surprised to see skinny,diseased people attired in tatters were walking every where in dehli.

This is nothing. we will make missile that can complete one full circle of earth. India better watchout.
Well done.. Long way to go.... Similar progress should be made in Education, Technology, Agriculture, Medicine, Safety, Law&Order Security and Corruption Free Administration.
Thankyou USA, you have started speaking Indian Language. Soon the Presidential Candidates will deliver speeches in Hindi.
Congratulations on this scientific success. Now start working on MIRV technology and hardened missile silos.
It is our message from the position of strenght, not only to China and Pakistan, but Russia, Japan and the middle east. Keep away or we will melt you.
this is confidence, announce earlier and prove it. rally well done DRDO. now waiting for nirbhay and submarine based long range missiles.
This one is for China, our brothers and sisters in Pakistan need not worry.
Missile for Peace !
