RAWALPINDI: Still reeling from the alleged torture and unlawful detention at the hands of the New Town police, 15-year-old Shahbaz Ahmed, it seems, is not yet ready to face the world.

“My son is in fear and state of shock,” said Muhammad Nawaz, the boy’s father. “So much so that the boy refuses to come out of his home, let alone appear in his annual school exams.”

Nawaz said that his son gets bouts of fear whenever there is a knock on the door and he needs to be constantly reassured that it is not the police. The boy’s mother, Shamshad Bibi, lamented that her son is not the cheerful boy that he was before the incident.

Shahbaz is a seventh grader of the Government Khan High School. He was picked up the by policemen on theft charges and kept in unlawful detention for five days before he was released on March 6 on the orders of a court bailiff. The accused sub-inspector Muhammad Iqbal has been suspended but a criminal action against him is yet to be initiated, sources said.

The boy’s father, Nawaz, claims he is being harassed and pressured by the accused sub-inspector to reach a compromise in the case. He has requested the court and the police to conduct inquiry and ensure that justice is served.

Meanwhile, an additional district and sessions judge has asked the city police officer to probe into the matter and initiate a departmental inquiry against the sub-inspector.
