It was the mongoose that won me over. A friend, in an attempt to soothe my ire, took me to a park that overlooked a lake. There was an aviary under construction there, which would house more than just the cacophonic crows and needy eagles we Karachiites have to contend with. It inspired a rant in me that I was enthralling him with, when two mongoose ran past me. Like stretched squirrels they frolicked in the grass and amongst the flowers. Frolicked. The last time anyone frolicked in Karachi, Maya Khan chased them down with a camera crew. I decided then and there that I both love Islamabad and hate it.
I love the city because it shows that when we want to, we can do things right. We can make a city that is beautiful, clean and safe. We can give children places to play and grant opportunities to commune with the natural. We can give you a place to live where the walls are low because no one will jump over them and the roads are wide because the speed cameras will stop you from abusing them. We can do all that and then maintain it too. If I wasn’t such a Karachiite, I would move to Islamabad.
I hate the city too though. I hate Islamabad because it represents the ability to do things right only once and only selfishly. The rest of the country can ripen and rot because no one in power lives there for very long. A city like Karachi can be ignored to the point of criminal negligence because all the attention and money and focus and time would much rather be spent trimming the grass in the capital. We deny the rest of the country safety and security and places for their children to enjoy so that a few can have it way over there. The result is, people in Islamabad don’t steal cell phones. In Karachi, if those speed cameras would have been installed then they would be on sale for half-price in Saddar by the end of the first day.
No wonder our leaders don’t care about our misery. No wonder the president, in his latest address to parliament, made it seem like we are progressing at a rate that would make China jealous. And no wonder the cries of victims go unheard so often and for so long. Every time our elected leaders look out the windows of their Islamabad houses, they see birds and trees, they hear the wind and smell the pine. And they see two mongoose frolicking in the grass like young lovers. They probably think we are making it all up. I hate Islamabad. Why can’t we all have one?

All the cities of Pakistan r just different n beautiful shades.Karachi sea, lahori food,Islamabad silent beauty all r the natural gifts of Allah.enjoy every colour n love
@amerbail: Life in Karachi!!!!!! Are you talking about the Karachi of the 60s and 70s?
obviously, when tax generated elsewhere is spent lavishly on some jungle, there would be injustice and imbalance of resources like it is in karachi!
Ouch! that hurts.... everyone around the globe are appreciating Islamabad n people of Pakistan are hating it.... Think like a Pakistani n u will love it dont think like a karachiite ... :) I agree karachi should b provided with same facilities but still this should not make you hate Islamabad.. after all its part of our country :) Pakistan is facing crisis its not just karachi brother ......
@Nadir:
Im sorry but thats not true. People living in Islamabad are actually paying much larger municipal fees and other land fees and property taxes. Just to get a property transferred costs as much as 25,000 for a 25x40 plot.
Please get your facts straight before posting such things on the net!
One weird thing. Why do you hate something that is good and not hate those people who made something worse.. I don't see any reason to hate Islamabad. But i do see many reasons to hate those people who have made Karachi like it is. Oh and by the way, I'm a karachite and i lived a few years in Islamabad and the time I realized that its the a whole lot better than Karachi was when i was walking on a street in the middle of the night talking on my cell phone till i reached home and that my cell phone was still with me. :)
Islamabad is 'Nouveau riche'.Karachi is aristocrat having a history, tradition, culture and wealth too.
@fus: People like you who think that native Pakistani cultures are not civilised but that only Indian culture is civilised are sadly mistaken. This is a discussion about cities and wanting to improve Karachi so it can be more organized like Islamabad but instead you want to tell us that wearing sari and doing Bharat Natyam dance is somehow more sophisticated than Pakistani folk songs or dances. I don't care for your Indian movie culture either. Sorry I prefer my Pakistani culture and native languages to Indian cultures.
@Bilal: Dont forget that Gen Musharraf's contribution to Karachi. No ruler in the centre has given funds but Gen. Musharraf. As Mustafa Kamal says that the gen Musharraf was keen in the development and inquire him about the progress of the projects too.
Dear All,
Don't be so taken aback only because of lack of greenery lol. I am a Karachiite but as stated in my comments earlier, Pindi is my maternal city but when I go to RWP & ISB, I feel like being locked & limited. For a Karachiite, one will always feel the RWP & ISB have a limited life but I can guarantee you Karachiites, just try to drive from the Park Towers to Sharah e Attar towards the Hyperstar, you will definitely feel an air of freshness, life being so unlimited, open & wide. Trust! What have other cities like ISB got like in Karachi???? Do they have the financial hub I.I Chundrigar Road? Do they have the business hub Sharah e Faisal?? Do they have so any schools, colleges, universities, parks, hospitals, wedding lawns, shopping centers etc etc all housed in one place like Nazimabad & North Nazimabad???? The funniest thing is that our DHA is far bigger than RWP & ISB.
As far as greenery is concerned, try to google the bird's eye view of North Nazimabad, PECHS, Gulshan, Gulistan e Jauhar, Sharah e Faisal & Clifton, you guys will be shocked to know how naturally green our areas are by the grace of Allah.
I can't judge any city's better than other as I love both but neither I was born in Karachi, nor in Islamabad. I was born in Jeddah & its far better than these two :-)
So we as Karachiites should feel proud for the best things that we have & others don't have & Islamabadis please try to make your hearts as bigger as we karachiites possess!
Regards
@ Singh, thanks for the correction as it was a typo error. Its approximately 20 million :-)
The obvious fact is that people in Lahore, Sialkot and Islamabad want to improve their cities because they are sons and daughters of the soil. In Islamabad you have mostly Punjabis, Kashmiris and Pashtuns who are native Pakistani and take an interest in seeing Pakistan become better. Karachi is a migrants city now and the native Sindis who are the true owners are largely excluded. Unless the mass of people who have moved from up country (Punjabis and Pashtuns) as well as Indian migrants (Muhahirs) start to think of the city as their own, things won't change in Karachi. Compare how beautiful and peaceful Punjabi cities and Islamabad is to Karachi and it's hard to believe we are in the same country.
Dudes, why to put all the blames to Politicians, what about us, how much we have participated in the rotting of this beautiful city once it was. once it was called city of lights. if today we all agree on the point that we will do every thing with honesty what ever we are doing you will observe the change in days
Islamabad isn't a city. Its a housing scheme for the govt employees. Its gorgeous! But it lacks spirit. Thus its a vacation spot and not where news journalist and otherwise writers choose to be inspired. Sami forgets that Karachi produced him, its the years of smog, soot, carbon, led, horror stories about crime, mutilation of humanity that has developed his dark humour and insight. For 4 generations the Islamabad Karachi argument has entertained my ever so over populated and widely spread across the country- family. We go to Islamabad to wash our lungs. But our brain feeds in karachi. I love and need both.
It's not just about resource allocation. The people running the city have to have a stake in it, consider it their own, love it as their own. That power needs to rest with someone who wants more than anything to see his city prosper. As long as the ruling powers in Karachi keep thinking of themselves as immigrants with their home somewhere in India or some rural poll-bank in Sindh, the responsibility of improving Karachi will keep bouncing around, with no one to claim it.
Let me ask you all this question
When a bomb explodes in Peshawar, do the hearts of Karachi and Islamabad not sink? When thugs kill common people in Karachi, do the people of Islamabad and Peshawar and Lahore not feel the pain? When a hotel in Islamabad is bombed, are we not saddened by an attack on our nation's capital?
All we need is good governance and good hearts. Inshallah, every major city of Pakistan will have the commerce of karachi, the infrastructure of islamabad, the vibrancy of lahore, the hospitality of peshawar, flora and fauna of quetta.
Thank you Mr. Shah...now we make Islamabad and Karachi fight!
Capital cities are better looking and better organized all over the world...and Pakistan is not, and should not be an exception.
While I agree with you in saying that all cities should be provided with a certain basic level of security and quality of life, please do remember that it is not solely the government expenditure that brings about what you saw and experienced in Islamabad. Please do also consider other very important social factors like the overall level of education, the gap between rich and poor, the economic structure of the city (port, industry).
Islamabad is special. It is a world-class city. I have heard this from many people who have lived across th world, often in the best places we can think of.
Be proud of it, because it is the capital of YOUR country :)
We know from your article that you loved every bit of it - why put forth your feelings in such a negative way?
@ Natasha: Yeah you can enjoy as you guys have sent all the criminals to Karachi.. so geo jee bhar k :)
I spent a good portion of my life in islamabad and agree with the writer completely. However I do feel that we were not taught to keep cities clean either. I recall pulling leaves off of trees or throwing wrappers , doing graffiti on school furniture etc and every child did it . People in Pakistan starting from their childhood show destructive behavior and are not taught that it's wrong. In fact they feel a satisfaction in some how destroying other people's or public property I really feel you need to address this end of the issue as well. I went to Karachi for bakes eid n people were cutting bakras on the street n not in their house because they think if it's outside my house it's not my problem
I have lived in Islamabad for all my early life and then moved to Canada/US. For all karachiites, we do have a place for you guys at islamabad i.e. Karachi Company. I lived nearby for more than 20 years and can guarantee that you will feel just as home once you go there ;) That will give a little comfort to all those karachiites who think Islamabad should havd never been in the first place. On a serious note, now I feel Ayb khan, although I hate dictators, was a visionary and saw what was comingi in future. Just imagine, if Karachi was still the capital, Pakistan would had been regarded as another Lebanon. Karachi waaloan, get rid of gang and bhatta mafia wars and you have the potential of becoming the best city of the world.
its sad to see how we talk of the 2 cities of the same country in the same manner as we talk of India n pakistan..... thr is no karachiite n isloo ppl...pakkstan comes first.... stop sledging each other... what we shud work towards is taking inspiration from each other n making our country a better place for its ppl....
i completely second you ... Benig a true karachiite I can never move to the superficial isloo
If it was essential to build a new and splendid city for capital then why it was not made at the juncture of all four provinces instead of at the end of the country . Furthermore, Motorways and other best facilities have been built in the same belt, while the whole country remains without proper basic and essential facilities. Hilly tracts for tourism have been also developed in that area only. Ziarat was never considered fit for development without any reason; same situation is for several tourist points in sindh. But the whole nation pays for development of Islamabad and palaces there and around that area.
so very true.. im fromm khi and the frist time i visited isb i couldnt help but feel the exact same way.. i didnt beliebe such a place could exist in out very own pakistan.. and since then ive fallen totally in love with this place.. wish we could do the same with the rest of the country.. if only we could be sincere for once and not do every small thing driven by personal agendas...
@Natasha: Lord, no! Of course, we shouldn't become sentimental even if insulted---right? Since you wish to talk about our representatives and you call them "thugs", do you realize what are saying, you are calling us "thugs" and this is as personal as you can get and then we shouldn't become sentimental about it. Fine, it's your prerogative as a free citizen and we must let you as tolerant ones. By the way, the crime is as it is due to Karachi being open armed in accepting and welcoming all, even the criminals, unfortunately, in a free society all citizens have right to movement and we hope that one day jobs and opportunities would make also these newer settlers of Karachi better citizens and law abiding ones. You know what, if keep Karachi closed for new settlers this would provide us that much more space for parks and all which could add to some beauty here.
@natasha: "tarsay hue" ! Perhaps but still willing to share whatever we got and that's nice.
@Tanzeel: Hey, Tanzeel, this makes Karachi the most beautiful home to everyone and we love this and happy for us all in Karachi.
I'm a Karachiite who lived in Islamabad for a year, fell in love with it, and has moved to New York. I see squirrels frolicking in my backyard and the woods behind my backyard every day and I am both elated and saddened for pretty much the same reasons Sami Shah is. What have Karachiites done to deserve what they don't have? Even the butterflies have abandoned us. All the 'nature' we have are flies and mosquitoes. And yes, eagles and crows.
Islamabad is just a place, suspended somewhere in time and space. It's not a city or urban megapolis, a town or even a village. Hideous architecture, uncouth occupiers, horrid fashion, no landmarks, nothing....I would hate it if my beloved Karachi's smallest corner looked like that identityless city.
We can also do it in Karachi. The things that impressed you and we would also like here. We can also make Karachi a city that is beutiful and clean and safe and we can also provide our childen in Karachi play grounds and parks and so on. We can if they can and we will love our city, our Karachi even more.
Stay right here and don't move to any place where 'religion' lives and not people!
Technically all our cities should have safety as a pre-requisite. Rest is all location based, obviously you can't bring mountains to Karachi, and sea to Islamabad - such things will vary. What you can do is get law 'n order. Even in Islamabad it is deteriorating with respect to kidnappings and car theft. It was well maintained, but with extreme expansion in the city, it will not stay as such, unless drastic measures are taken.
Law n Order and City Planning ! - Two key things to work on in our future!
Islamabad/Rawalpindi is mainly inhabited by pothohairs and punjabis, Karachi is inhabited mainly by bhayyas from UP/bihar india, this is the reason for the difference.
Islamabad : the BEAUTIFUL .
@Nadir: One other reason for Islamabad being kept well is because it is governed by a centralized authority called CDA, who still has enough power and authority to regulate rules. Even the mighty have to bend rules via CDA, which makes things a bit tough for them. In Karachi, anyone with power can do anything, and no institution regulating residential etc. is this strong.
That would be true for karachis comparison with any other city .. karachi is just a mess !!!
Good Article. But some bigots here need reality check. Now you know where our 60% paid taxes go.... Did Islamabad was run by the people who live in Islamabad or by our tax money. On the other hand in Karachi, construction of a one mile long road near Korangi has already taken 3 months and it is still under construction. Mustafa Kamal would have completed the same road in a week or 2.
I loved reading this article.... I am from Islamabad ... And i loooooovvvveeee it!!! Not only its my birthplace but the city is like a friend to me ... the peaceful islo and the civilized mindset is just the thing u want to live in! But at the same time I love the rest of Pakistan and all its cities... especially lahore and karachi ... if we really do love our cities we can change them .... karachi can be a wonderful city but i wish people can refrain from being selfish with their own living place.... :))! Just think of the seaside ... and all that good water sports u can have there ... its just about changing our selves.... Envying is gud .. but don't forget that good things shud be there so that u cannot lose the taste of it ;) :)! Prayers for both Isloo, Karachi and WHOLE PAKISTAN :))))!!!!!
iwent to krc.it was first time when i go out side alone.this was my naval training for six month in p.m.a.krc when i stepped out from station v heared that out side condition is not sood.there r some problem s b/w mahagir and sindi
people r not good, they thing they r fast but ict is also fast but they give little give respest to relation but in krc ufff
We Want MQM in full power and by this I mean Absolute Authority to have Karachi better than Islamabad!
@Natasha keep on depriving us of our rights and our earned revenue and then say to us 'tarsay hoay'.Thats exactly the same that happened with bangalis and Balochis. We never learn.huh. @author nicely written article.
@Anjum Hameed Karachi cant be like Islamabad because of the same reason/mentality which shifted capital from Karachi to Islamabad .
I agree and disagree. Karachiites vote for their corrupt leaders like the rest of the country. They have a choice not to elect those who pocket their hard earned money. Poverty does not make u steal. I run a buisness and I ve caught women in Pajaroes and new corollas shoplifting and then we have the example of those who no matter how poor are so honest that they will put even the most pious to shame. But the saddest thing that i observed on my visit to karachi is that they always find an escapegoat for their woes. I think of my fellow Pakistanis as Pakistanis as most of the people around me. But there we r from Punjab, outsiders. :((
@Tanzeel: That is the beauty of Karachi. Dont be a racist. @Author Wonderfully written. You have a knack for words!
Clearly a very deprived pakistani. if you hated Isb, you must visit the rest of Northern Pakistan. Think you might weep for weeks.
Nothing like it in the world.
the mentality in karachi is messed up cos everybody from all over the country and from all backgrounds comes here and ruins it. things might not have been so out of hand if we did not have such a "big heart". :p
MQM is the biggest party in the city, so its their responsibility to do developmental work, not only in their majority areas, but also in the rest of the city, but unfortunately they are too busy in other "activities". and Mr Shah u should have visited Islamabad before Lashari was the CDA chairman, he has ruined the city. Thanks to him entire greenbelts were cut dwn to widen roads to solve traffic issues to no avail there are still massive traffic jams on all the main roads. healso alloted plots to his close cronnies on greenbelts, further robbing the city off its greenery. another corrupt CDA chairman and isl will soon be liek the rest of pakistan, tree-less!!!!
I love how every one loves to play victim and scream foul. Capitals around the world get preferential treatments and residents pay through their noses to live there, Capital living is expensive living, and when you pay, you feel responsible and then you act responsibly too
@Author
FYI, its just KHI where u cant walk on streets with cellphones in ur hand, and no other city. So the speed cameras are not the reason why there is no mobile snatching in Islamabad. Even in Hyderabad, u can roam freely on streets, without being scared of mobile snatchers.
people who are showing so much love for Karachi in comments, should also voice for the metro trains in Karachi like Delhi and Bangalore metros.
Just 3 letters why Karachi can't be like Islamabad... M Q M.
Nature yes its beautiful till you develop allergy then you want to cut every tree from the face of the planet.
P.S: i hate spring.
Shocked yet very nice to see a Karachite FINALLY realize that there's more to Pakistan than just Karachi ... but sad to see that it only happened once they were annoyed and envious.
truly agree with what you have written but dearth of good schools & good hospitals does pose a major problem esp when you are a karachiite settled in islamabad, the comparing never stops
Imagine what us Islamabadis go through when we have to live in Karachi!
Excellent article. Any one who loves nature will love Islamabad. If you dont have pollen allergy, Islamabad is one of the best places to live. I am a Karaciate, and got opportunity to live in Islamabad for few years and there is not a single day when me & my family don't remember those good days.Karachi, the Shahrae Parishan, certainly has job opportunities but minus this factor, it is one of the worst places to live. If you ever get the chance to live in Islamabad, pl do avail it, you will not regret...
Well, you can't have one because as mentioned earlier. You're home to the mighty MQM. Let's not forget others. DHA in Karachi could be made a much bigger version of the I-10 sector =P but then again it's home to the great Baloch leaders and their "humans are toys" thinking sons and guards. We islamabadis are so used to of fist fights that most of us won't last a day in Karachi. I hear about your fights. Seen some. Too many guns and guards. You lack men. Plus we value human lives. you should drop by the all time classic phada place. The F 7 hotspot. You'll get a new perspective. No offense to anyone. We're all Pakistanis first. Islamabad's beautiful and karachi's entertaining. We're all good to go :)
I born in Karachi, live in Karachi and will die in Karachi, inshAllah.
I love Islamabad's temperature, it reminds me San Francisco.
You are about 20 years too late. Islamabad was really great in the 1980s. That is when there were less people and consequently, less traffic and pollution.
At that time, you Karachiites referred to it as some backwater, because everything shut down at 9pm. Well, we liked it that way.
Its definitely not the same anymore. And don't let the parks or green belts fool you.
Shah Jee Khosh karoo
@sad Karachiite: Isloo strongly agrees
Im from Islamabad, but I Love Karachi! iski baat hi kuch aur hai!
Absolutely an amazing piece! Lived reading it. The balance of humor with facts was excellent ;)
And yes, I'd even move back to Pakistan for the beautiful city!
Islamabad is beautiful at the expense of whole Pakistan. I believe that building a new city as capital was the biggest mistake. It had taken billions of money to build this planned city next to Margalla. If that money have been used for betterment of country and Instead of that if other cities of Pakistan have been upgraded then we had whole Pakistan beautiful like Islamabad.
@sad Karachiite
In past 64 years history of this country, only party which has done efforts for the development of Karachi, its just MQM. and we really appreciate it.
Fun, thought-provoking article. On a side note, Karachi needs a Mass Transit System. Whatever happened to the Karachi Circular Railway? We need to move the massive population efficiently through this massive city. Will improve productivity, environment, traffic. We'll continue being the nation's revenue engine, just don't put hurdles in our way!
Dada nothing beats Burns Road ka khana..
Islamabad is B-eautiful!
Great one again Sami. I have had the same thoughts on many visits to the capital. Islamabad is a metaphor for Pakistan; a country made by the elite, for the elite & of the elite. Ayub Khan spent a poor country's fortune building this city when Karachi (or Lahore for that matter) could've carried on quite well as the capital. It indicates how low on the list was people's welfare & how high was the need for the rulers to feel secure & comfortable. To my knowledge, the only justification was that Karachi was indefensible against Indian attack. As if Pakistan could survive anyway without its economic heart while carrying a manufactured shangrila that remains a drain on the exchequer.
It is sad that ppl miss the point or are just ignorant. It is all about the money. What ppl don't understand is that karachi is the lifeline, Pakistan run on Karachi. But when it comes to development funds, Karachi is last in the line. Whether you like or hate MQM, whatever little work you have seen in last many years is mostly beacuse of them. And if you don't agree then prove me they are corrupt. For example, Punjab also has corruption but still if they put 40% in their pocket they still put 60% on Lahore. Karachi is Lawaris. Recently there was news that KMC does not even have money to pay salaries. Islamabad is beautiful so is Lahore, but why can't we allocate seperate funds to develop other cities, like Karachi, Quetta, Peshawer, Multan, Faisalabad, Hyderabad, Sialkot and Sukkur. Quetta is a beautiful city and has a great location. I wish govt. had spent money to develop it.
Whatever people say but at least karachi has a LIFE that islamabad doesn't. Sorry to say but it feels like a dead city to me coz there are no people in there. It can easily be termed as the WORLD'S MOST BORING CITY ever. With all its flaws, karachi is still more beautiful and charming.
Please come to Quetta to see the other side of the spectrum.
Sami Shah .. only thing which is an inviting entity for express tribune..Rest of this site is just filled up sensational crap !
Its not only islamabad city is so clean and beatyfull there are our forces build towns called funny names too Defence housing authority seems like we lived in north korea il jong ming country where only millitry is allowed to do any thing and u guys not gonna find those names town in any where in the world i bet.
love the article, because it so truly echoes the differenciation! I love the way u write Shah!
Islamabad is a baby city - Karachi is a mega-city...there is no comparison.
@ Natasha: A single word for you 'PUNJABI' !
Good stuff. Sindh / Karachi has a UK citizen as its godfather and Kaim Ali Shah as its CEO - so what do you expect.
two words for karachiites - tarsay hue.
loved reading the article. Though its slightly depressing.. and rightly so! Every city in Pakistan should be an Islamabad.
lol
It was a master plan city for the capital Islamabad. its not some another city of Pakistan. MQM did a lot to karachi. Whatever they did wrong is wrong and we say it wrong but some stuff they have done which was done never before for the this great city Karachi.
@Sad Karachiite you are way too sad to ignore history so blatantly and miss the whole point of the article. By the way, Karachi of today, if it is something, is becasue of the immense amount of work MQM did here. I am not entirely sure how much they could have, becasue as somebody here mentioned, funds are just diverted away from other cities and of course, there is huge corruption in MQM too ( i am not a supporter, mind you). You want to see Karachi's old pictures when it was the capital. And read a bit of the history of the city too.
Main reason Karachi's misery is "Karachi is for everyone"
In the winters Lahore too resembles Islamabad. In the same way, it resembles how Khadm-e-aala punjab looks out the window and sees parks and grounds of model town and greenery on the mall road. The rest of Punjab has been thoroughly ignored.
It is also on the mentality of people. In Islamabad, one obeys traffic rules. Even if roads are literally empty, people will obey the street lights. Specially no one dares to go back on the one-sided road just because he wouldnt have to make a you-turn. In karachi even if leaders start to live, mentality will remain same and it will take long time to change it.
Assalam u Alaikum,
Although I'm a Karachiite by heart & soul but I consider both Rawalpindi & Islamabad as my second home as they are my maternal cities. Every place has its pros & cons too. I agree with your points dear. Let us Karachiites make this clear to the rest of the world that our city houses around 200 million people from whole Pakistan & other countries too & contributes to more than 70% of the total national revenue. That makes Karachi far ahead of any other place in our dear homeland so hats off to all Karachiites for having such a big heart! :-)
Regards
Yet another reason to vote for PTI ! :)
Not to mention the lack of foresight that the planners built a city on a faultline and allergy central.
it's been a long time since i read your article and i must say this, you've still got it. and as an islooite i totally agree with you though. it is pretty selfish but hate the politicians not the city. glad u enjoyed here :)
Good article sir , do write some more. Inspirational stuff .I'll work to promote the name of my country and the city Karachi i belong to . INSHALLAH Enough with the crap leaders .
Islamabad, the beautiful. One of finest places around the globe.
me too... gud one SS :)
Islamabad is kept pretty while the rest of the country foots the bill. A few years ago, an official from CDA said in a television interview that it was justifiable to divert drinking water from Rawalpindi to water the parks and nicely laid out banks along the roads as we have to make a good impression on foreign visitors. That sums it up pretty well the attitude of those who run the city and the rich who live in it who recieve tax exemption and pay lower municipal taxes than other urban centres because it is still a "developing" city.
