PESHAWAR:

Despite militancy, worsening law and order situation and frequent power outages, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has witnessed a slight increase in the number of industrial units against all odds, according to a survey.

The total number of industrial units increased to 2,299 across the province against 2,252 units in 2007, officials requesting anonymity said while quoting the Industrial Survey Khyber-Pukhtunkhwa 2012.

Industrial revival is also in full swing as the number of sick and closed fell to 478 from 702 units five years back.

“There are a lot of problems faced by the local industry including law and order situation and the energy crisis but still the latest survey conducted by the K-P Industrial Department suggests that we are moving ahead at a time when sustaining the number of units is a hefty task in itself,” officials explained.

A fair number of these units are located in Swat which fell a victim to the upsurge of militancy but as normalcy returns, investors are setting up new and reviving old industrial units.

The survey took a year to be compiled while the printing and publishing will take at least another six months.

They said that there were at least 75 industrial units which had completed their life expectancy period and had been shut down with most of these units were situated in Hattar Industrial Estate.

“The revival of the closed units has been a good omen for the province as it would create jobs and that is exactly the province is in dire need of,” they concluded.
