But let us focus more deliberately on Imran Khan’s aspirations to further the debate about the immediate possibility of this country breaking free of the dead hand of a dysfunctional system, whose core value and purpose seem to be to perpetuate personal power of the few at the expense of a toiling and an increasingly despairing majority. Imran Khan’s promise to change the tectonic plates of our national politics has recently been jolted by the elections of Senate chairman and deputy chairman — both die hard PPP loyalists. The Opposition did not contest the election for even symbolic reasons. This exemplified solidification of the existing political interests, which otherwise on talk shows come across as bitterly divided, whose representatives cannot wait to punch the other in the face, sometimes quite literally.
This way, the election of Senate chairman and deputy chairman demonstrate the flexibility that sworn enemies — in this case the PPP and the PML-N — can show under the exigencies of circumstances. The two along with the others joined hands and made the result of the election a resounding success.
As a professed prophet of revolution whose followers are already bugling their arrival on the shores of success, Imran Khan has to have an answer to this coming-together of the traditional power elite to preserve their jurisdiction. This coming-together of the established parties has already blocked one avenue for Mr Khan — the Senate. This is a structural impediment to changing the course of national politics as Imran Khan claims he would. The Senate would remain the same, at least for some years, regardless of what happens in the elections for the national and provincial assemblies, which may be called by the end of this year. Even if we were to assume that the PTI, for whatever reason, is set to sweep the next elections, the Senate would remain a no go area, dominated and run by the existing set of parties. No legislative agenda would pass through without conceding to their demands and accepting their centrality in the system. So much for the idea of change.
But even the dreamy-eyed prospects of PTI doing exceptionally well at the polls for the national and provincial assemblies look extraordinarily difficult. The system and the process under which these elections are to be held is now decided through the Twentieth Amendment. Barring a few procedural objections here and there, the pitch for the coming polls is prepared by President Asif Ali Zardari and Mian Nawaz Sharif. This pitch has not been made to support PTI’s in-dippers. The wicket would be made to support what largely seems like a match fixed for the existing players to win.
On top of these odds is PTI’s persistent problems of party organisation. PTI has a ‘work in progress’ board hanging outside its offices. The influx of heavy weights has not, yet, translated into the momentum to cause the apocalyptic tsunami that Imran Khan always talks about. For all these reasons, the national political scene is shaping up to look like ‘more of the same’.

This mean Imran Khan was right to say that both status quo parties PPP and PML(N) will be join each other against PTI. Imran Khan was 100% correct that these two parties are scared of PTI tsunami.
I am convinced that Imran had already sensed this outcome. Both corrupt parties are together now. Both they do not want any positive change in country. I beleive PTI will win next General Election.
You know that SC is going to jail Gilani and Sharif, so who cares about their senate?
People say change will come through letting Imran Khan try because of the other options even if odd are against him. Yet, Imran Khan won't even contest elections when the odds are against him and they will be unless change occurs which he can't make happen without being elected. Those caught up in the Tsunami forgot to come up for air.
Mr Talat,if we accept your version of how things will be in years to come ,then we might just as well stay at home , as we have done so in the last four years.
Imran khan, is the only one in this mess that has shown the resolve and the courage to speak up against the present , and if nothing is done, future corrupt set-up.
You raise a valid point about the senate. However , lets keep in mind how this senate members were elected. Majority of whom, as reported in the media were paid for. As such , an investigation of the senate members,nomination/election would have to be undertaken to weed out the bad apples. The rest would have to play by the book or face an angry crowd.
There has to be a change , as the nation cannot carry on in this manner. The only person that has stepped forward to bring about the change is Imran Khan. We all know that it will not be easy and he alone cannot do it.
We need to be a lot more positive in our analysis. We have silently accepted a corrupt regime, lets make some noise and elect in the next general election an honest regime. Which of course is PTI.
@PTI troll 76: You cant and the current turmoil in your party is a clear indication that the bubble has burst. As per your party elites you need ELECTABLES and all electables are in the two parties which you are now woeing. From SMQ to Amir Muqam show me change... you wont be able to. Tsunami has ended with General Pasha departure,
Well-written. we all have these questions in our minds..but what gives me HOPE is that a strong LEADER with the help of strong accountability institutions will lead these 'heavy-weight-traditionalists' in the right way..all for Pakistan's good! IKs been doing this well all his life..'Leading' All the BEST PTI!!
Call me biased, but I haven't seen anything wrong with the moves Imran Khan has made. And he seems to have the answer to every problem - including this one (as he alluded to in a TV interview but indirectly hinted that he didn't want to reveal the plan at the moment)
If anything, I see the hand of Allah behind his success. And if Allah, has chosen him as the harbinger of change, then ladies and gentlemen join the team, its finally time for change
I think this article is really good.
I do fear, Are the people of Pakistan going to vote for the same old mischievious PPP and PML-N and keep suffering?? One can only pray for a miracle to take place and get PTI to escape from PML-N's and PPP's "joint mischief," and win!
change and only change by imran possible
change is certain
no one can stop change.its certain.come and see in small villages of south punjab.
Get real! Do not expect any CHANGES from Imran! He is an establishment "BLUE EYED BOY" who is for Status Quo besides he thinks he is a God Gift to human mankind! His TSUNAMI has lost its velocity & going nowhere in fact fizzled.
Talat u r the only reason that ET exists on my wall. Once again an enlightening analysis.
Many of us just take things into or for a system. system no body talks what this system is which doesnot allow any change. Your observation is really good. Is this possible that media should also make some policy atleast on national security.
Finally a sane analysis on ET. The odds are heavily stacked against PTI, with the Senate now with the PPP. IK and his 'trolls', or whatever the self-proclaimed "liberals" might want to call them, will fight to topple these crooks. That's the least we can do. Once thing's for sure, IK will go down fighting, even if he doesn't win. That's enough reason for me support him, the rest is God's will.
Alas, the pseudo intelligencia of Pakistan. Someone should ask Mr. Hussein, what could Imran have done to stop this deal between PPP and PMLN? The elections were for Senate seats, which are selected (on paper) by the national and provincial assemblies. PTI didn’t have any representations in those assemblies. Even if they had taken part in the by elections, most they would have done is to retain the seats vacated by those who joined PTI. Those seats wouldn’t be enough to get one senator through to the senate. We have also witnessed how senate elections were conducted by these two sleuths in Pakistani politics. The incidents of wheeling dealings and offers of huge amounts to parliamentarians are reported by the media. Surprisingly, the election commission is silence on such blatant disregard of election rules. In my considered opinion, IK has exposed the system completely by not participating in the farce given the name of elections in Pakistan, at both levels, in the by elections and senate member’s selections. It is a fact Pakistani politics is rotten to the core. What Mr. Hussein and others of his ilk should be doing is to be exposing these mafias who are sitting in both houses of the parliament rather than attacking a person and a party who is at least not only pointing to the malaises in Pakistani politics but also promising to do something about it. What Mr. Hussein is doing is endorsing the bad practices by showing defeatism. If these unsavoury characters got hold of the Parliament and the Assemblies it is the duty of all the Pakistanis to get rid of them. Why IK should be alone in this endeavour? Secondly, what are the guarantees that majority of these selected senators wouldn’t start to change their loyalties once PTI gain majority in the Parliament. Looking at their track record it is more than a possibility.
good analysis Talat. But most of the analysts are able to understand that change is already there. I can changed politics where big politicians are being arrested and banned from contesting election. It is all due to Media and Imran khan.
So i think Imran khan participation in politics already showing results and if Senate is no Go Area for incoming Govt. then it does't mean you stop thinking about change. It is common practice of status quo that they put loads of barriers and the people who want to bring the change has remove these barriers and should not be afraid of these things. Democratic change means moving forward step by step.
After next election, within some months President would be changed. After two years Senate would elections will held again and who knows what these senators will react If IK comes to powers. Quality people like I ahsan & R Rabbani will definitely work for the betterment of country.
Too much emphasis has been put on the importance of the Senate. It's importance, numbers wise, is not that much when voting for a President is done. Also it is a law making/approving body. We have the laws what we do not have is implementation due to poor governance. Another factor you seem to down play is the political awakening and understanding of the people that all parties PPP,PML-N,PML-Q,ANP,MQM, JUI-F and even JI have failed them and PTI offers an alternative and yes PTI may not deliver but for democracy to function it is necessary to have a genuine opposition.
Good article and I am a PTI supporter and this is not typical ET!!! Talat poured some sense into ET!!!!
@Maryam:
Tomorrow is going to be the historic day, when for the first time in the history of Pakistan, President of the country is going to address a joint session of the parliament and that shows that the system is maturing and cleaning itself.
LOL You cant be serious.
Bitter pill to swallow for PTI supporter but the reality it has to confront.
PTI now should have a plan B ready. The senate and presidency are in PPP hands for the next 5 years. The caretaker government will be handpicked hand picked, the election probably rigged to some extent. The ECP is pretty spineless given it could not even make sure the new electoral rolls could be up in 5 years.
My personal opinions that N leage should be targeted and some sort of mass defection be engineered. With N leage out of the way. Then a street agitation with other APDM parties to topple the government with demands of election on NADRA rolls along with a neutral care taker setup and Military protection of polling booths. (Like 71 elections)
Talat sahab this time you more realistic and candid. This the true picture on the ground.
Talat bai agreed, but we are adamant to break the nexus of evil and to make it happen. Change is bpind to come if Imran is sincere which I believe he is.
SO this means Imran Khan is telling truth that both these parties are togather against PTI . BUt Inshahallah Zardari can make plans but IF my ALLAH make plan no one can break it .
Looks like Mr Talat is of the opinion that everyone, Senate,EC and the Constitution included, owes it to IK and PTI to get out of their way.
Well, everyone else including Lenin, Mao and Che had to bring their revolutions without the active cooperation of the opposition.
Or, is it a prelude to, 'Look I can not bring the changes I want on account of the Senate, so why bother . I will boycott the elections again'.
please you are among those personalities who make the opinions and why you not took a stand for our country.you are not among the nation....?your only obligation is to analyse.....? why...?took a stand not to be clapper......
if you have people power even senate can not stand in a way (turkey had similar problems with army) but people power changed that
This article also shows that 20th Amendment was nothing but Under hand deal between PPP and PMLN.
But I still have hope from PTI and will go out n vote for Imran and PTI
Playing within the rules will never change the game, one need to challenge the rules and the game. Change through democracy (elitocarcy) is not possible, and even if Imran khan comes into power, that wont be a change as the system and rules as put by Mr. Talat will remain more or less the same. For real change we must seek the alternative, which is nothing but khilafah. Democracy and dictatorship are two side of the same coin and for another 60+ years the people of Pakistan will be witnessing the same musical chair between the "professional politicians"!!!!!
To change or Not to change is in the hands of Pakistani nation now. Its NOW or NEVER. The two options are clear: 1) Elect PPP / PML-N / ANP / JUI etc again and see a replica of the past 65 years miseries (with 100% guarantee). 2) Elect PTI and take a 50-50 chance. Chances are that IK may not deliver on all his promises (which is the case with the other parties anyway) OR he may well deliver (a prospect worth giving a try). So............. What say?
All I see is another army take over in the next couple of years.
There is one thing out of equation and that is help of Allah. We believe in it and it gives us strength to fight Jahal and Zulm. Our support for Imran Khan will continue with firm believe that one day common Joe will realize facts. We are not building heaven but we are certainly trying to improve the situation. We are only limited to our efforts and strengths, Walao hu Alam.
Talat has made 2 points.
Because of present strong position of PPP/PML N is senate, it will not be possible for PTI to bring any meaningful change. 2.How a free and fair election can be ensured after 29th amendment.Answers: 1. Yes we need legislation for effective governance. But our main problems are not because of lack of adequate legislation but because of lack of implementation of existing laws and gross irregularities/corruption by the ruling elite. For both of these things we do not need any NEW law or for that matter Senate's help but just right people at the right position.
Lets say that the new CEC and EC are formed in a way that it suits both big parties and it becomes clear that they will influence the election through political appointees. In that case PTI has the option to got to the court and plead for an election under army which will effectively eliminate civil bureaucracy's role in election.
PTI has to work on its organization as it is rapidly expanding. If anything this a good sign of a growing party which has witnessed enormous growth in recent months.2.
Great article talat bhai.I think people should now give a chance to imran. He cant do any worse than what these so called "awami leaders" have done.
For as long as the PPP and PMLN share power in this country - the only thing to look forward will be the subsequent elections. With sincere efforts like Imran Khan's, and the many more Imran khans poised to enter the political space, the people will see these two parties for what they are: selfish, incompetent and power hungry.
sighhhhhhhh Finally, some balance in ET's op-ed pages!
@Maryam: It's not his fault. I think IK lacks a basic understanding of English.
He is gleefully using destrucutive worlds like tsunami.... Imagine him running an election caimpaign in Japan like that???
Apart from his vocabulary, I think he needs to be less of hypocrite. Look at his previous sermons and now look at the people he is on-boarding.
@Maryam: are you trying to draw comparison between IK and Zawahiri.Pathetic quite simply pathetic.
@Salman Zafar: How naive you are?
PTI is not in a postion to win major seats. However, it will allow PPP to win by diving the right vote bank where the competition is very close between PPP and PML-N, So in some hotly contested seats PTI will actually help PPP win.
Why would you in the first place assume that Imran Khan's motive in politics is to break free the country 'of the dead hand of a dysfunctional system' ?
To me Imran Khan is there to perpetuate the status quo of military establishment having someone there doing their bidding when they are not directly ruling the country. Change ? What change ?
Imran Khan urges Pakistanis to revolt. http://www.dawn.com/2012/03/16/zawahiri-urges-pakistanis-to-revolt.html
Dear Talat, the relatively smooth and fair election of the senate on time already demonstrated that the change has already arrived, though not the one of which you and Imran Khan is talking. If we think of change is something good, then indeed getting its due share of senate seats according to their mandate, political parties got matured and no tress-crossing of parliamentarians happened. That is a good sign. Tomorrow is going to be the historic day, when for the first time in the history of Pakistan, President of the country is going to address a joint session of the parliament and that shows that the system is maturing and cleaning itself. The system needs to be changed from the inside and from not some outside exogenous change. Imran Khan himself is part of the system since 1996 and till now people have not accepted him suitable for change. Let's believe our people as they are wise enough.
Talat Hussain doing what he does the best.. Analyzing, dissecting but no mud slinging... Great Work Man... keep it up.
change is coming in sha Allah
Talat, what you are saying makes sense (as always). But such cold logic did not succeed in predicting the outcome of the elections in 1970 through which Bhutto swept to power as it was on a WAVE of popular support. PTI is reaching a similar level of support especially among the youth and with more youth vote added in the electoral rolls (the latest, which have yet to be finalized) PTI has very good chances of winning the next elections. True, the odds seem to be stacked against PTI (with other parties ganging up), but it's also helping them establish their point about the difference between forces of status quo and the forces of change. And you are making quite a big assumption that PTI will not do ANYTHING till the next elections and will meekly agree on going with the rules set by the two big parties. I believe they are yet to play all of their cards in this respect and hopefully after the party re-organization is complete, we'll see more of a political strategy to deal with the status-quo forces before the next elections.
As for the Senate and the PPP and PML-N protecting their interests, it will not be as easy as you say because PTI will bring all laws that will be in direct benefit to the people. Any party going against such legislation will only expose itself at a great cost to its perception in the public especially when the public is looking for CHANGE.
Secondly, I think we quite clearly remember the trade that was the hallmark of the recent Senate elections. With such "esteemed" senators, there can be many more ways to EMPTY the Senate selectively by conducting across the board accountability.
@Mr Talat hussain. In your previous article ,you deduced form the victory of sitting Prime Minister's son in By- elections that there is no change whatsoever in political mindset of people of pakistan. In this article you conclude the same from the senate elections. Whilst senate victory does signify future legislation impediment , how does it, however lead you to infer that masses have not changed? is beyond me. Your analysis sir is heavily skewed in favour of pessimism. You may call PTI supporters "dreamy eyed" ,however your own realism remains shallow and unable to reach the core of the matter.
Only ALLAH can make things right.
As a nation we have lost our dignity and respect because we went long away from our religion Islam.
Come back to Islam and follow it and ALLAH will make you rise on all as it is promised from all mighty ALLAH.
Yeah but if PTI is in majority in the parliament then they will be able to punish the non degree's and corrupt elected professionals in the senate. I am sure half of the senate people can be disqualified either due to corruption or fake degree once PTI is in the parliament.
So, this mean, we should not even hope for a change. The day i will see no hope, I will leave this country. Its that simple.........
The more things change, the more they remain the same.
I think the circumstances is changed in 2012 and the peoples of Pakistan is well aware of these so called big parties and taking ''baaris'' but it won't happen again, and if suppose it happen thn there will be a huge bloodshed in the history of Pakistan among the ''right and wrong''...
TALAT bhai...you will be surprised Inshallah after elections..the more people turn against Imran..the more I like it because they all will be shocked when they know that TSUNAMI has swept elections..
Newspapers can say whatever they like but my vote is going to PTI. I have convinced my family to support PTI as well. More and more people are supporting PTI and inshallah we will clean sweep next election
John Kennedy's father had mapped a dynasty in the White House. One son following the other for 2 terms; 32 years at least. We all know what followed. Today, there is no Kennedy in Congress. The Shah of Iran ruled with an iron-fist. He could find a burial place in Iran. Crooks like Hosni, et al had their day. The well-known saying: "man proposes and God disposes." The two mafia groups in Pakistan aided by the subalterns can plan but their day is coming soon, insha Allah. The people will rise up. Enough is enough.
Would it be wrong to interpret that the real reason for non-participation, IK's personal party, was fear of exposing its feet of clay.
Rightly said, the traditionalists would certainly not let anybody uproot their way of doing politics. Besides this another problem is big majority of people think still the traditional way. They don't even understand what PTI is promising and what change it wants to bring. This big majority of people still thinks the traditional way and Imran Khan has not been able to change their mindset, that is why a lot of people have still not come out of the traditional way politics is done. This is something Imran Khan would have to put his attention to, and these people make up a big part of voting lists.
i agree with you sir and the analysis is also a very calculated and a good one but as said by iqbal "pah wast e rah shajar say umeed-e-bahar rakh" so no matter what the circumstances say my vote is for imran khan weather he wins or not.......
When heavy weights jump on board (boat), it shaken up and unbalanced, similar the case with PTI. But now jumping is reduced and bit calmness in boat, now my personal opinion that PTI boat is heading in right direction by "Membership campaign" and "Party election" and smooth sail for PTI in future.
As far as by election is concern, Talat Saab Senate matters but good governance can be do without senate support. I think Pakistan's priority is governance rather amendments.
PPP and PMLN are one and the same....
DO VOTE FOR PTI.
There is nothing wrong with a change. However, change must be better not just for the sake of it. We had gone crazy against ZAB and even hanged him. What a change that was we got Gen Zia and still suffering at the hands of his jihadis. Let us hope that in next elections good people from all the parties are elected and a bolder govt takes over.
Furthermore, Pasha has retired :p
True to certain extent. However, bi-election dynamics tend to be different from general elections. At the worst, it tells us that more work needs to be done at the grass root level. However, I do agree on the issue of senate vs. parliament. The solution for PTI (if it comes into power) would be to tighten enforcement muscle till the time they are able to make their headway into senate for policy making. In the meantime, they should try to build public and media pressure on political rivals to concede to their demands so that at least basic policy making can continue to progress.
imran change is closer to obama change means No change except color change.
I must say that Talat Hussain has impressed me with his ability to see through this facade known as the 20th amendment unlike other mainstream journalists who go all gung-ho in praising this "democratic" achievement.
This is nothing but a SHAM aimed at protecting the interests of the two established political mafias!
Imran Khan has committed a gross mistake by allowing rejected members of other parties come in style in the party. It would not be a matter of great concern if they had come in a humble vein. But their arrival was felt like the making of a Tsunami which would sweep everything. It seemed that Qurashies, Hashmis and other peers were the greatest liberators of the country. It boggled mind that when they could not do anything worthwhile in various parties for a quarter of century, what cat will they produce from the bag.
Almighty Allah will make things better and INSHAALLAH change will be there.
I read your first column as well and i totally agree with you but Khan says he will clean sweep in the next general elections unfortunately i can't believe this BUT he is a genuine leader and a leader can see behind a wall, i am sure he will INSHA ALLAH.
Agree with you 100%, but at least we are trying to break the partnership of the PPP-PMLN. We will fight till the last ball but the decision ultimately lies with the people
